Fox News recently asked Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about former President Donald Trump’s struggles to pay the $464 million appeal bond that is due on Monday.
In response to Fox News’ questioning, Ocasio-Cortez explained that she doesn’t have sympathy for Trump, nor does she trust him.

A Fox News representative asked AOC about his struggles to pay his $464 million appeal bond that is due on Monday. Like many other Democrats and Republicans, she had very strong opinions. “He’s broke, and he’s willing to sell the country for a dollar in order to make whatever he needs for himself,” the New York democrat said.

AOC also blasted the former president for his actions, saying that this issue was very serious. “I think that what we are dealing with politically is the much larger and much more grave and serious pressure of having this judgment against Donald Trump, and him being in this degree of debt and the financial pressures that he is under, and what he is subject to do in order to obtain those assets,” she said.

AOC Believes Trump Is A Risk

The New York representative also disagreed with analysts who believe the court should not take away his assets if he cannot post his bond. She explained, “I actually think that there is risk in not seizing these assets and the open window that exists in him trying to secure these funds through other means.”
“We’ve seen a lot of interesting transactions happening with Truth Social and other means. And there’s a very real risk of political corruption.”

Treating Trump as a Regular Citizen

AOC believes that they should treat Trump as a regular citizen regardless of the fact that he was a former president. “I think Attorney General James has been handling this case with tremendous skill,” she said. “ It’s ultimately up to her determination, but it is my belief that all people should be treated equally under the law. And if that seizure of assets would be pursued to any other American, then Donald Trump should be treated the same,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

Democrats Agree

Most Democrats agree with Ocasio-Cortez’s opinions on this subject. In fact, they have also been vocal about their views. Representative Jahana Hayes also told Fox News that he thinks people should just stick with obeying the law as it’s now in the hands of the court.
“It’s not in the hands of Congress,” he explained. “So I think that people should obey the law.”

Republicans Disagree

On the other hand, most Republicans are supportive of Donald Trump. They believe the ruling was unfair and have come out to blast it verbally, showing their unwavering support for him. Republican Representative Michael Cloud said, “We are seeing a [Department of Justice] that is weaponized, in many ways, against the American people, President Trump being a key target of that.”

More Issues After Trump Ruling

The bond in question was set by New York judge Arthur Engoron after he ruled that Trump had to pay more than $354 million in damages for fraud. However, this fee has increased to $464 million since the initial ruling due to interest.
Therefore, Trump intends to appeal this case but must first post security or a bond. According to several reports, he is struggling to do this.

Trump’s Lawyers Sound the Alarm

Trump’s lawyers first hinted at funding issues when they came out to say that Trump does not have a way to secure a bond for this huge sum of money. According to them, this is a “practical impossibility.”
They also explained that banks and lenders would not give Trump this huge sum of money as he does not have a lot of cash in hand.

In direct contradiction, the former president publicly declared that he had a lot of cash in hand. He denied their notion that he could not get a loan due to this fact.
“I currently have almost five hundred million dollars in cash, a substantial amount of which I intended to use in my campaign for president,” Trump posted on TruthSocial.

What Would Happen If Trump Doesn’t Pay?

If the former president does not pay his appeal bond, things could go downhill for him and fast. New York Attorney General Letitia James would start to seize his assets.
In fact, it seems as though James is already making these moves, as she does not expect him to make the bond in time. If successful, all his properties in New York will be seized.

Seizing Assets Is Hard Work

According to Adam Leitman Bailey, a real estate attorney, James seizing Trump’s properties might be harder than most people realize. “Bonds people do not like to use property as collateral because it’s hard to liquefy the asset if there’s a default, and for the attorney general, this isn’t so easy either,” he said. “It’s going to be very difficult to seize his properties. It takes a lot of work.”
