A US Federal Judge responsible for sentencing many Trump supporters involved in the January 6 Capitol riots has just suggested that such an event may repeat itself. The judge in question, U.S. District Judge Rudolph “Rudy” Contreras, recently voiced his concern about Donald Trump's potential to incite another riot in the near future.

Contreras is known for sentencing several Trump supporters involved in the January 6 riots, including Jeffrey Sablo, a geophysicist from Colorado. Sabol was sentenced to serve over five years in federal prison for the part he played during the violent protest, which saw several police officers injured.

During questioning with the FBI, Sabol stated several times that he was convinced the 2020 election was stolen. The geophysicist suggested numerous people tampered with Dominion voting machines throughout the presidential election.

Sabol did not deny his decision to take part in the riots, claiming he was consumed with “patriotic rage” on the day. According to him, a “call to battle was announced,” and he “answered the call because he was a patriot warrior.”

Contreras said Trump, alongside his allies, motivated people like Sabol to launch the attack on the Capitol. The federal judge believes that the former president may attempt to instigate another riot during the lead-up to this year’s presidential election or after it, should he lose.

Contreras added that he wouldn’t be surprised if another event similar to January 6 took place sometime in the next few months. “It doesn’t take much imagination to imagine a similar call coming out in the coming months,” Contreras said in March.

Sabol Has Served Most of His Sentence

Sabol was caught on record assaulting numerous police officers during the riots and has been held on pretrial since his arrest on January 11, 2021. By that account, the geophysicist has already served more than half of his five-year sentence.

Just before his arrest, Sabol tried to destroy his laptop by placing it in a microwave oven and also submerged his phone in water. After this, he attempted to board a flight to Switzerland before he was detained. At his sentencing, Contreras ordered the geophysicist to pay over $32,000 in restitution and sentenced him to three years of supervised release.

Trump’s Call to Arms

Contreras and others like him believe that Trump’s “will be wild” tweet that led to the January 6 riots was essentially a call to arms for people like Sabol. Hundreds of people have been convicted for the role they played on that fateful day, and many argue that their actions came as a result of Trump claiming the election was stolen.

Federal Judges Think Trump Should Be Held Accountable for January 6

Several federal judiciary members in Washington think that Trump should be held responsible for the events of January 6. Speaking at a separate trial, Contreras said that Trump and his supporters should “bear responsibility for what occurred that day.”

A Federal Judge Pointed Finger at the Republican Party

In a previous January 6 sentencing, Judge Amy Berman Jackson attacked the Republican party for their role in the aftermath of the riots. According to her, the Republican party was “actively shunning the few who think standing up for principle is more important than power and have stepped forward to educate the public and to speak the truth.”

The Election Lie

“The lie that the election was stolen or illegitimate is still being propagated,” said Jackson. “Indeed, it’s being amplified, not only on extremist social media sites but on mainstream news outlets.” She continued, “And worse, it’s become heresy for a member of the former president’s party to say otherwise.”

The 2024 Election Is Fast Approaching

The general election is rapidly approaching, and contenders for the presidential seat have been preparing for the last leg of a fight that will have far-reaching effects. Despite many attempts to impede him, Donald Trump is hell-bent on running, and polls have painted him as a credible threat to Joe Biden, who has to deal with complaints about his age and performance. Either way the die rolls, there are sure to be some serious consequences in the aftermath, but hopefully, the people will not be the collateral.
