Several beautiful cities around the world have earned ‘iconic’ status over the years. San Francisco is one such city. However, within the last few years, it appears that fewer people are being captivated by the Golden State’s beauty.

Reports show that residents are moving from areas in California because the rents are too high and the crime rate is rising. Also, the political climate isn’t all too friendly for some.

According to reports from the US Census Bureau, over 800,000 people have left California between 2021 and 2022. This means this city had a net outflow of about 350,000 residents. Some of the residents moving away are interested in a more laid-back and affordable town.

65-year-old Bob Giramma moved from San Diego to Murfreesboro, Tennessee. “We weren’t tied to any community, so we looked for a place that was aligned with the forward path for us,” Giramma told Business Insider. “California was not aligned with that. Tennessee is.”

So far, the favorite locations for California residents relocating are Texas, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, and Florida. Also, they are looking for their new homes on the popular home-listing site Redfin.

The website analyzed data from users looking for new homes from August 2023 to October 2023 to “measure the share of homebuyers looking to relocate from one metro to another.”

Furthermore, the website’s data showed that some of the top areas homebuyers were leaving were San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

It also indicated that California was the only state with residents leaving from multiple cities. Redfin’s data also found that most people leaving California looked for new homes in Las Vegas and Seattle.

Seattle was the most popular destination for San Franciscans looking to relocate. Experts believe most people who move to Seattle do so for its similar tech scene. Additionally, residents leaving San Diego and Los Angeles were interested in homes in Las Vegas.

Also, the Census Bureau’s report shows that Washington and Nevada attracted almost 100,000 Californians between 2021 and 2022. It also indicates that Seattle is a popular location for millennials. More than 90,000 millennials relocated to Seattle in 2022.

Las Vegas is a top choice for people leaving California because of its cheaper house prices. According to a real estate agent, Andrew Arevalo, Nevada’s zero income tax is one of the main appeals.

“I feel like Vegas is the new Colorado,” Arevalo told Business Insider. “It has shifted from Denver getting a lot of people from out of town to Vegas. It has now officially taken over.”

Another reason Nevada is a top choice is because so many properties are available at very low prices. According to Redfin, the average home could cost about $410,000. However, there are fewer homes in Denver, and the average price was $568,500.

Census estimates that Las Vegas’s population grew by 10% between 2010 and 2020. Since then, it has not stopped growing. Regardless of where people choose to move, the unfortunate reality is that many don’t think California is where they want to live. So, what is the state doing about it?
