Popular media outlet The New York Post has criticized Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. According to her, New York City was now way too expensive for the “working-class people” to afford living in the city.
On Tuesday, December 5, The New York Post published an editorial covering various topics, including the congresswoman. They agreed with her suggestion that the city was becoming unconducive for the working class. However, in the same vein, they also pointed out that the working class is facing the current issue because of Ocasio-Cortez’s policies.
Furthermore, there was a recent town hall meeting to address several issues, including the housing crisis. AOC said that the cost of houses in New York affects the working class more than the rich. However, her critics believe that her policies created the problem.
AOC has suggested that the rich should pay more taxes. Additionally, she has supported several immigration ideas that have cost the city more money and resources.
“The people who are moving out of the city are not by and large the wealthiest people. They’re the working class. They can’t afford to live here anymore,” AOC stated during the town hall.
The New York Post also highlighted how AOC has been a vocal advocate for extensive immigration. It was critical about how much it would cost the city to accommodate a lot of migrants.

According to the editorial, several city agencies have had to experience budget cuts. They claimed that the cuts resulted from the city struggling to care for the migrants.
“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens, is, after all, a Democratic Socialist. Look at what occasioned the digital town hall where she spoke: recently announced cuts across city agencies,” the editorial stated.
“Why are these needed? To pay for the migrants AOC and her ilk demand we admit in infinite numbers, and house and feed forever at a cost of more than $12 billion through fiscal 2025,” it continued.
Furthermore, the piece also criticized current housing policies that the progressives supported. According to the New York Post, an alarming number of New Yorkers spend more than half of what they earn paying rent.
“A recent survey shows a third of New Yorkers are paying over half their income for rent. Lefties used that fact to call for even more rent control — which, in fact, is a huge reason city housing is so limited,” the editorial mentioned.

Additionally, It also criticized lawmakers’ roles in limiting housing options. For example, developers don’t benefit from tax breaks and the Tenant Protection Act of 2019. The Act doesn’t allow landlords to pay to ensure their buildings are up to code. As a result, it has taken more than 40,000 units from the market.
The editorial also criticized AOC’s climate change policy. According to them, it’s one of the reasons houses are becoming more expensive in New York. The New York Post also suggested that these policies could affect other issues that affect New Yorkers.
