Fani Willis, the district attorney for Fulton County, is preparing for her reelection campaign, and it appears she is gaining ground. Willis has gained considerable momentum as the Democratic primary draws near, which might influence the contest’s outcome.

Willis’s national notoriety has increased as a result of the Trump case. She accused Trump of attempting to rig the 2020 Georgia presidential election results, a swing state that barely supported President Joe Biden. Republicans raised concerns about the prosecution targeting Trump politically and the prosecutor’s behavior before the trial.

In the forthcoming May 21 primary, Willis will have her first political test. Her opponent, Christian Wise Smith, had already challenged her in 2020. A recent survey by Georgia-based political consultant Fred Hicks discloses the race’s current status.

One thousand potential Democratic voters participated in the survey. Seventy-nine percent of participants said they would support Fani Willis in the Democratic primary. Her challenger, Wise Smith, won nine percent of the vote. For this survey, the margin of error was plus or minus three percentage points.

Notwithstanding the criticism directed at Willis for her prosecution of Trump, these figures point to a solid lead for her. Republicans have charged her with political prejudice, while Democrats continue to stand by her.

Wise Smith wants to engage Fulton County citizens on important topics while Willis concentrates on her reelection campaign. He highlights the necessity of reforming the criminal justice system, with a focus on mass imprisonment. He promotes remedies to end the pattern that disproportionately impacts communities of color.

Also, Smith is an advocate for a more liberal approach to drug laws, but this doesn’t mean he will win. In 2020, Willis defeated Paul Howard Jr., the former district attorney, in a runoff with almost 72% of the vote. She then faced no opposition in the general election.

POLL — Should Donald J. Trump Be Allowed to Run for Office?

No new surveys have been released less than a month before this year’s contest. In this heavily Democratic county, where Biden won with almost 73% of the vote in 2020, the contest winner is expected to be the clear favorite in the general election.

Willis’s case against Trump centers on his claimed attempts to submit a fictitious slate of pro-Trump electors to the Electoral College and his phone conversation with Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which Trump asked him to obtain enough votes to sway the election in his favor.

Trump has entered a not-guilty plea to all criminal accusations, accusing Willis of pursuing him for political gain. Republicans have begun to question Willis in light of the case. The defense lawyers also argued they wanted the special prosecutor, Nathan Wade, excluded from the case due to his relationship with Willis.

They claimed that the couple’s hiring resulted in their financial advantage from government cash. However, Willis said that their relationship started after he was recruited and shouldn’t be excluded.

One thing is sure: Willis holds onto the lead as the race heats up, with her ability to win still undecided. Everybody’s eyes are on Fani Willis as the primary approach. Her dedication to justice and the positive outcome of the most recent survey put her in a solid position to win.
