Celebrities Who Have Shared Their Experience of Abusive Relationships

Domestic abuse have been a constant menace in many relationships all over the world. Laws were put in place  to eradicate it, but the statistics only get higher, and even celebrities fall under the radar. 

It is pretty disturbing that domestic violence remains a common problem in society. Both everyday people and celebrities have found themselves as victims of the societal vice. 

Although there are lots of educational programs on domestic abuse, people still find themselves in unhealthy relationships. A good number of celebrities have opened up about being victims of domestic violence. Here are some stars who confirmed their experience.

Amber Heard

“All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” star Amber Heard, 35, is one of the celebrities who experienced a toxic relationship During her divorce from Johnny Depp in 2016, that actress stated that she faced emotional and physical abuse.

Rihanna 

Behind the picture-perfect screen display, famous musician Rihanna had also been abused while dating co-star Chris Brown. In 2009, the “Umbrella” singer was spotted with bruises and a black eye after ex-boyfriend Brown assaulted her in his car.

However, Rihanna later addressed the issue in 2015. The star explained that many victims find it difficult to open up about being abused in an interview. The topic is a sensitive one, and most people do not want to remember their experiences.

Reese Witherspoon

It is also quite notable that some people find it hard to leave abusive relationships. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon revealed that one of the most challenging decisions she ever made was “leaving an abusive relationship.”

Mariah Carey

In 2009, Mariah Carey also confirmed how difficult leaving an abusive relationship could be. The star explained that she experienced emotional abuse in past relationships. For the singer, leaving was difficult because she had business connections with her partner.

Tina Turner 

Tina Turner’s relationship fuss with Ike Turner was quite viral. In 2005 the iconic musician revealed in an interview that her then-husband didn’t hide the fact that he was a “woman-hater.” The star was so affected she had wanted to retaliate countless times.

Evelyn Lozada

Evelyn Lozada also faced similar struggles with abuse during her relationship with ex-husband Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson. She once advised all women and explained that people should honor themselves.

La Toya Jackson 

La Toya Jackson once recalled how being in a relationship with an overly-possessive man could be. The star explained in an interview that her ex-husband Jack Gordon felt he owned her and she was trapped in the abusive relationship.

Charlize Theron

While some celebrities were abused in their love affairs, some grew up in abusive homes. Growing up, Charlize Theron and her mother suffered at the hands of an alcoholic father. 

The star and her mom Gerda lived in constant fear due to her father’s unpredictable character. She once revealed in an interview that the night her father died, he came home drunk and shot at her with a gun until her mom ended the threat.

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera also grew up in an abusive home. As a child star, Aguilera couldn’t open up about the trouble she faced at home while she was younger. But, Aguilera revealed that she had an abusive father when she received the Deacon Bonnie Polley Community Hero Award in 2019.
