Vice President Kamala Harris happily clapped along to a Spanish protest song during her visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The song was performed by a group banging drums and singing in Spanish. However, her expression changed suddenly after an aide leaned over, probably to translate the lyrics to her.
Harris stopped clapping, lowered her hands, and looked more serious. The lyrics seemed to be critical of the Vice President and the administration’s foreign policies, which led to her change in demeanor.
After her remarks in Puerto Rico’s capital, Vice President Harris visited the Goyoco community center in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan. The Vice President’s visit to Puerto Rico was part of a trip to showcase the Biden administration’s efforts to assist the island nation in its recovery and renewal endeavors. Additionally, during her visit, she also participated in campaign events.
During the visit, she took a tour of the center and listened to the staff and community leaders sharing their perspectives and insights. As her motorcade approached, it was greeted by several demonstrators and onlookers. Some held signs, one accusing Kamala Harris of being a “war criminal,” while another criticized the USA and Israel as “genocidal.”

Another held posters with instigating messages saying, “We did it, Joe: 14,861 children killed,” referencing the death toll in Gaza. Upon arriving at the Goyoco community center, Vice President Harris stopped in a courtyard where six musicians were playing.
Pool cameras captured her clapping her hands and nodding along as she watched and listened. Later, a singer performed accompanied by a piano. Initially, Vice President Harris seemed to be enjoying what she thought was a fun song. However, it became clear that she was informed about the translation of the lyrics by Executive Director Mariana Reyes, who was accompanying her on the trip.

The song, which was being performed, targeted the Vice President, the Biden administration as a whole, and their policies. “Long live free Palestine and Haiti too,” they say in the song. “The vice president arrived, making history. We want to know, what do you think of the colony?’ t’e singers asked outside of the community.
Harris stopped clapping and instead folded her hands, offering a slight nod as the song continued. Before she visited the community center, Vice President Harris went to a residential home outside San Juan. Thanks to a federal program, the house had been damaged during Hurricane Maria but had since been equipped with solar panels and water tanks.

She was accompanied by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Deputy Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Adrianne Todman, and Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi.
“What we all need to do then is just supply the community and the talent here with the capacity and the resources. And so President Joe Biden and I have been very intentional about what we are doing for the leaders and the people and the families of Puerto Rico. So far, our administration has invested over $140 billion in Puerto Rico,” Harris said, championing new innovations in hurricane-resistant technology.
The incident has attracted attention due to its unexpected nature and the reactions from online audiences.
