Mattel, the renowned toy company, has recently announced its plans for a new theme park in Kansas City in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Mattel Inc., known for brands like Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Fisher-Price, revealed the plans last Wednesday.

According to a press release from Mattel, construction is scheduled to start later in 2024, with the official opening in 2026. Mattel says the park will be “an all-new entertainment resort destination.”

Mark Cornell, president of Epic Resort, made a statement about the location during an interview with The Star. He said the site in Bonner Springs was selected after a thorough evaluation and tours of the facilities in Kansas City, Kansas, including the Speedway and Legends.

“We just thought it was a good fit, and we see Bonner Springs as the heart of America.” The first park in Arizona has an enormous climate-controlled indoor area. Cornell wants to copy this in Bonner Springs. It means people can visit all year round, no matter the weather.

In collaboration with Epic Resort Destinations, the new park promises a host of exciting attractions similar to those found in Arizona. Adventure seekers can expect fun and thrilling adventures on Hot Wheels-inspired roller coasters such as Bone Shaker: The Ultimate Ride and the Hot Wheels Twin Mill Racer.

Meanwhile, children will be captivated by the Thomas & Friends-themed World of Sodor. “Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City will bring our iconic brands to life with epic roller coasters, family-friendly attractions, an immersive theatre, themed dining, and so much more,” Mattel’s Chief Franchise Officer Josh Silverman said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to expand these themed entertainment destinations and invite new fans to experience the world of Mattel in all-new ways as they create lasting memories with loved ones.”

At the new park, visitors can also look forward to the Barbie Beach House, which resembles the one at the Arizona location. Additionally, there will be the Barbie Dream Closet Experience, where guests can create their own stylish Barbie outfits and see their favorite characters come to life.

Also, one can enjoy a round of mini golf inspired by classic Mattel games like the Magic 8 Ball and Pictionary. Moreover, fans can immerse themselves in the world of Masters of the Universe by exploring the iconic Castle Grayskull fortress and engaging in a thrilling game of laser tag to showcase their competitive spirit.

“These brands are going to remain relevant. I also think the attractions and the rides are world-class,” Cornell said. “I just think that the power of the brands will affect tourism, will certainly affect business, and will create the tax dollars needed to support these economic stimulus packages,” he added.

Mattel’s initial Adventure Park was unveiled in August 2023 and is scheduled to welcome visitors in 2024. Mattel plans to begin construction in Wyandotte County before the end of the year and plans to open the park in 2026. Fans interested in tracking the construction progress of the nine-acre site can visit the theme park’s website for updates.

Close to the Speedway, Homefield LLC is planning to redevelop the closed Schlitterbahn water park. They plan to invest $838 million near interstates 435 and 70. This plan includes building indoor and outdoor sports facilities, as well as hotels and apartments.
