Ella and Eliza Fuller, formerly conjoined twins, celebrated their first birthday earlier this month. They are flourishing as they step into toddlerhood and are being hailed as “miracle babies.”

In a heartfelt social media tribute, their mother, Sandy, reminisced about the day she and her husband, Jesse, met their “hugging twins.”

“Today and everyday we celebrate these miracle babies,” Sandy wrote alongside a series of photos of the identical twins from the past year. “So many praying warriors praying with us from all around that our girls would make it safe and sound. My heart is filled with so much gratitude, especially today. Ella & Eliza, you girls have no idea what an impact you each have been in so many lives thus far!”

Ella and Eliza, born conjoined at the abdomen, were delivered via Cesarean section on March 1, 2023, at the Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women in Houston. Each is estimated to weigh 5 pounds and 10 ounces, and the babies spend their initial four months in the NICU.

On June 14, 2023, a team of 17 clinicians at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston successfully carried out the intricate, six-hour procedure to separate the sisters. Just four weeks later, Ella and Eliza experienced going home for the first time in their lives.

Dr. Alice King, a pediatric surgeon at Texas Children’s Hospital and Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, spearheaded the endeavor.

In a news release, Dr. King said, “Our team started planning and preparing for this operation before these babies were ever born. From conducting simulations of the procedure to collaborating extensively with our colleagues in anesthesiology, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, and radiology, we have all been working together toward one common goal: the best outcome for Ella and Eliza.”

Both babies were extubated three days after the surgery, which allowed their parents, Sandy and Jesse, to hold their daughters separately for the first time.

“They are so incredibly strong and as healthy as can be,” Sandy recently told People, noting that the girls are “thriving” less than a year later.

“You can look at them and you would never think they were conjoined 8 months ago,” she added. “We are so blessed to be able to share God’s miracles in our girls with the world.”

Happy birthday, girls!

One user commented, “These little darlings are as cute as they can be. Thank God for the successful separation operation. Prayers continue to thrive as they grow and bring much happiness to the parents and all who love these precious gifts from God.”

Another added, “First give all the praise, honor and glory to God for this blessing. Thank God for the doctors and nurses, and all that lifted up prayer for this family. To GOD be the glory.”
