Liza Koshy is a YouTube star-turned-actor and TV host who starred in the recently released Netflix film Players. However, her recent exploits are not what brought us here today.
The spill she took on the red carpet for the Academy Awards made her name on headlines most recently. The 96th edition of the event took place on Sunday.
It happened as she walked down the step-and-repeat in a red mermaid gown. The 27-year-old was killing it when she suddenly started falling backward before steadying herself with her left hand.
It was an apparent gaffe, but Koshy played it like a pro, calling out an imaginary manhole responsible for it. “There was a manhole! You all saw that?” she joked after receiving assistance and getting back on her sky-high heels.

Koshy’s reaction to the mishap is not surprising. She is famous for her self-deprecating and goofy sense of humor, and she used them well. When someone asked if she was OK, she shrugged it off, saying insurance protected her ankles. “It’s a write-off,” she said.
As she replied, someone from her team was already busy fluffing her mermaid dress, so it fell just right. Koshy rose to fame on platforms like YouTube and Vine. However, the Houston native has recently become a regular at high-profile events. She has hosted several shows and live events, including the Met Gala.
Her mistake became the first meme of the night, but as the event progressed, it was overshadowed by more interesting moments. For example, Vanessa Hudgens appeared to be sporting a baby bump.

Koshy wasn’t the only star at the Oscars who lost their balance. According to footage shared by Variety, Kirsten Dunst also almost tripped on the Oscars red carpet as she walked with her husband, Jesse Plemons.
She looked astounding in a crisp, white gown—one that may have never emerged from the fall unscathed if Dunst had not reached for Plemons’ hand when she bumped into a nearby statue of an Oscars trophy.
Like Koshy, she also recovered quickly, spinning around and placing her hands on Plemons’ shoulders with a laugh.

In the 2024 Oscars race, “Oppenheimer” led with 13 nominations and was the most voted to break the Oscar-night record of 11. Movies with that record include “Ben-Hur,” “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
By the end of the award ceremony, the hit movie had won seven total awards, leaving it just three awards short of a record.
