7-year-old Samuel Moreno Carranza was a victim of gun violence during a Sunday service at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. The boy was shot in the head when his mother opened fire during service at popular Celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s church.
His mom, Genesse Ivonne Moreno, aged 36, entered the Houston megachurch with him around 2 p.m. She then fired shots using an AR-15. Moreno did not reach the main sanctuary and was killed after exchanging gunfire with two off-duty officers.
Unfortunately, both her son and a 57-year-old man were critically injured during the incident. Sadly, it’s not clear whether the boy was shot by his mother or the security guards attempting to restrain her.
“I don’t want to speculate on that, but what I would say is if it was, unfortunately, and that female, that suspect put that baby in danger, I’m going to put that blame on her,” Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said during a press conference last week.

The little boy has undergone at least two surgeries within 24 hours as doctors work tirelessly to save his life. “He was in cardiac arrest multiple times, and no one can determine whether he has significant brain activity because his scalp tissue is too friable to allow the attachment of EEG wires,” his grandmother wrote.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he underwent emergency surgery. “Half of his right skull now has to be surgically removed during two surgeries done in less than 24 hours,” His grandma, Walli Carranzas, said.
Despite the gravity of his condition, medical teams worked around the clock to stabilize him and provide the necessary care. The surgeries included taking out part of the frontal lobe of his brain and also part of his skull.

His grandma, Walli Carranza, posted a photo of him in the hospital bed, where he was still in critical condition. She said he’s fighting hard for his life. Moreno’s second victim was shot in the leg but was reported to be in stable condition later that day.
“My faith tradition demands of me compassion, and I have it for my deceased daughter-in-law,” the grandmother wrote in her post. “She has schizophrenia and, now we know, anti-social personality disorder. Her brain was broken.”
The grandmother further spoke about the neglect by law enforcement agencies. She claimed that there were over 20 previous reports of neglect and medical abuse to child protective services in Harris and Montgomery Counties. Unfortunately, law enforcement never intervened in the life of her at-risk daughter-in-law.

Additionally, she claimed that guns were previously discovered in Moreno’s diaper bag, purse, and car by authorities. The grieving woman wrote that little Samuel had “no protection of his God-given right to life.” She also pointed out that the legislators who profess to be ‘pro-life’ prioritize unrestricted gun rights over the fundamental right to life.
“What is the excuse for those who knew and did nothing and for legislators who refuse to allow red flag laws but do allow anyone to buy an assault weapon?” Carranza asked. She further called for legislators to “repeal the second amendment” because “[the first] means too much to allow the second.”
