In an interview on Tuesday, 10 June, Miley Cyrus opens up about healing and the ups and downs of her personal life. Speaking to Monica Lewinsky on her podcast, Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, the American singer and actor reflected on her family feud. She revealed how they worked to make their peace with each other after years of strained relationships.
This interview happened while on her press tour for her album “Something Beautiful.” Miley shared new details about some of their long and difficult times, which she called the “Dark Decade.” She revealed that she is now on good terms with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, and the events that led to their reconciliation without ever going for therapy.
What Caused the Tension in Miley Cyrus’s Family?
As Miley Cyrus opens up about healing, she further reveals what caused the rift in her family: fame and her parents’ divorce. According to her, the tension had been piling up for years before their public fallout. During her Hannah Montana days as a new Disney star, some of her siblings were not comfortable with her fame, so they started to distance themselves.
Miley said that her parents’ divorce, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus (née Leticia Finley), in 2022 as well, deepened the tension. Her parents first announced in October 2010 that they were getting divorced, but they didn’t follow through with it because by the following year, they were back together.
The pair filed for divorce again in June 2013, but barely a month later, after the couple’s counseling, they reconsidered. And then, Tish filed for divorce for a third time in April 2022, and this time it was final. She’d cited “irreconcilable differences” in her petition, noting that she and her husband of almost 30 years hadn’t lived together since February 2020.
Billy Ray and Tish share three children, Miley, 32, Braison, 31, and Noah, 25, as well as Tish’s children from a previous marriage, Brandi, 38, and Trace, 36, whom Billy Ray adopted after they got married.
After their divorce, “Half of my family wasn’t even talking to each other,” Miley said. Each of her five siblings took sides, with some members leaning toward her mother and others aligning with her father. Miley admitted she felt closer to her mother during this time and cut ties with her father.

How Did Miley Cyrus Repair Her Family Relationships?
As Miley Cyrus opens up about healing, she noted that the conflict among her family members had been piling up for years without any resolution. That even when her mother, Tish, tied the knot in Malibu in 2023 to Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell, Miley, Trace, and Brandi were all there to support her, but Noah and Braison didn’t attend.
So, in order to repair the relationship in her family, she opted for an informal connection to rebuild their bond through conversation, shared time, and honesty.
“Just getting everyone into a room would’ve been a war,” Miley said.
Miley took the first step to reconciliation rather than waiting for the perfect time or a formal process, like therapy. “I just kind of bust through the pile that’s stacked, and just go, ‘I’m here. You’re here. Let’s start by having a good time together,” she said. That casual and unexpected approach to resolving the emotional “mess” led to deeper conversations and gradual healing.

How Long Did It Take Miley Cyrus To Rebuild Her Family Connections?
In the interview chat with Monica Lewinsky, Miley Cyrus opens up about healing after a decade-long family feud. According to her, it took 10 years to rebuild her family connections. And all she did was focus on fixing the relationships instead of revisiting old wounds.
“Oh my God, it’s been 10 years, and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start. This is like emotional hoarding.”
But now, after reconnections and reconciliation, Miley says she’s in a better place with both her parents and her siblings. As a result of the healing she’s experienced, she’s channeled some of it and poured her heart into her upcoming music.
Her next album will feature a track called Secrets which she says is about her dad. She shared that it touches on the silence and truth her family avoided for years.
