Early Monday morning, authorities discovered the body of an 8-month-old girl on the 405 Freeway. Also, they found a 9-year-old girl alive but with moderate injuries, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Shortly after, a woman, who police identified as the children’s mother, crashed her car into a tree in Redondo Beach.

Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene and identified her on Tuesday afternoon as 34-year-old Danielle Johnson. In a separate incident, authorities, on Monday, found a man, later identified as the children’s father, dead from apparent stab wounds.

They found him in an apartment in Woodland Hills. Police identified him the following day as 29-year-old Jaelen Chaney. Following an investigation, law enforcement sources linked the discovery of the two children to the murder investigation in Woodland Hills and a deadly crash in Redondo Beach.

According to police reports, during the early hours of Monday morning, Johnson and Chaney “became involved in a verbal altercation.” After the confrontation got heated, Johnson became violent, stabbing Chaney, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

“I woke up in the middle of the night around 3:40 to screaming and commotion,” a neighbor said. “It lasted about a minute, and I was really groggy, and I just went back to sleep.” The neighbor also said there was fighting the night before.

“This morning, I was getting up to go to work, and I left, and I walk out the front door,” the neighbor added. “And I see their blood coming from their apartment into the hallway to the elevator, and I see blood on the walls.”

Neighbors say the family kept to themselves, but they usually hear screaming and commotion at night from their unit. Police say they recovered a knife with biological evidence at the scene. They also suspect the mother of crashing into a tree.

Furthermore, authorities say they suspect the mother of leaving the two children on the highway. Police said the two children were “expelled” from the car while it was moving. It is not yet clear whether the baby was already dead or died later on the highway.

Authorities hospitalized the 9-year-old girl, who authorities believe is a witness to the murder, for her injuries. Police say she is now in safe custody. The 26-year-old neighbor recounted the incident to KABC, describing the blood trails in the hallway.

The woman’s father called 911, who told them to check inside the apartment, where they found the man dead. Describing the sight, the woman said they found him dead in a pool of his own blood. “He was facedown on the floor,” she said. “And there was a lot of blood.”
