Chadwick Boseman’s roots in Anderson, South Carolina, continue to be celebrated as the Anderson School District Five’s board unanimously passes a resolution to rename the Southwood Academy of Performing Arts Center after the late actor.
The newly christened Chadwick Boseman Fine Arts Center pays tribute to the iconic actor, best known for his portrayal of powerful Black figures in film, including Marvel’s “Black Panther.”
Boseman’s impact on the entertainment industry resonated deeply, particularly among Black communities, as he shattered stereotypes and brought to life characters that inspired millions worldwide.
His portrayal of King T’Challa in “Black Panther,” the groundbreaking African superhero, left an indelible mark on cinema history. Additionally, his performances as historical figures such as Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown showcased his versatility and talent.

During a poignant moment at the board meeting, Chadwick’s parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, graciously accepted the resolution honoring their son’s legacy.
Carolyn Boseman fondly remembered Chadwick’s passion for education and the arts, highlighting his active involvement in school activities and his commitment to helping others. Overwhelmed with emotion, she expressed gratitude to the community for commemorating her son’s memory in such a meaningful way.
“He was a hard-working young man,” Carolyn Boseman said to those in attendance. “He enjoyed doing his school work, and he also enjoyed theater. He was a member of the choir and the theater part of the church.
So he was always busy and always trying to help others. We thank you so much for thinking of him in this way,” she said while wiping tears from her eyes.
The initiative to rename the performing arts center after Chadwick Boseman stemmed from a collaborative effort between community members and school board member Harold Kay II. After receiving approval from the Boseman family and the board, the decision was met with unanimous support.

Kyle Newton, assistant superintendent for external affairs and chief communications officer, emphasized that renaming the center serves as a testament to Boseman’s enduring impact and serves to inspire future generations of students.
Harold Kay II echoed this sentiment, affirming Boseman’s status as a role model for young people. He emphasized Boseman’s humble beginnings in Anderson and emphasized the importance of determination and perseverance in achieving success.
Kay stressed that Boseman’s journey from a small community to global stardom serves as a powerful reminder that greatness knows no boundaries.
“Chadwick Bosman was a product of Anderson School District Five,” said Kay, “and we wanted to ensure that his legacy is not forgotten. This renaming inspires young people. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what your background is. If you apply yourself, you can accomplish great things.”
Principal Jamie Smith of the Southwood Academy of Arts echoed the sentiment, stating that the renaming of the center is a fitting tribute to Boseman’s legacy.
