Segregation is Being Reintroduced as “Affinity Classes” in American Classrooms

The United States abolished segregation almost 70 years ago. Things were black and white, from segregated bus rides to drinking fountains at the time. However, in an Evanston high school in Illinois, segregation seems to be making a comeback with a new name, “affinity classes.” These affinity classes are specially designed for students of color.

The school district claims that the classes are designed to reduce the difference in academic performance between the races. However, they are specially made to assist black and Latino students in improving their grades and achievements in the classroom to the level of their white peers.

Evanston Township High School has a student population that is 45% white, 23.4% black, 20.3% Hispanic, and 5.2% Asian. Although courses are optional and affinity classes aren’t official requirements, the school district is segregating against students of color.

Many people aren’t aware the idea of “affinity classes” exists, but there have been several posts online about these new high school courses. A popular account on X( formerly known as Twitter), Libs of TikTok posted screenshots of descriptions for an Evanston Township High School course.

One states: “The course is restricted to students who identify as Latinx, all genders.” The second: “The course is restricted to students who identify as Black male students.”

The school district soon found itself facing mounting criticism. So, in response, they changed their tone on the descriptions to, “While open to all students, this option section of the course is intended to support students who identify as ‘Latinx’ or ‘Black.'” This makes one wonder if it’s only people of color who need the so-called “support.”

As far back as 1954, the Supreme Court finally abolished racial segregation in public schools, declaring it unconstitutional. Since then, the country’s education system has grown. So, it is interesting to learn that in 2023, there are still Americans who believe that race-based separation in schools is a good thing.

So far, there hasn’t been a factual report showing that school segregation causes any positive results. The Wall Street Journal wrote, “The district hasn’t presented any analyses on whether the affinity courses have improved student outcomes.” The idea of affinity courses isn’t based on anything more than a desire for segregation in American classrooms.

Also, some people within and outside the school district may appreciate the idea. However, the truth remains that the color of a student’s skin shouldn’t matter in this curriculum at all. Students need to learn together; if some need an extra hand, there is no need to discriminate between races.

If they reintroduce segregation in public schools, students of color would start feeling inferior to their white peers. Also, the school would be ignoring white students who need help. So, they should treat all students the same way regardless of race.

Unfortunately, there are other schools, like Evanston Township High School, across America that have racially segregated courses. A few schools in Minnesota, California, and Washington offer similar courses.
