WNBA Fines Angel Reese Again After New York Liberty Game

Chicago Sky rookie, Angel Reese has been subject to another fine after her outburst during the New York Liberty game. This comes shortly after the WNBA rookie was fined for missing a press interview.

On the night of Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the Chicago Sky lost to the New York Liberty. However, during the game, two technical fouls were given to Reese before she was ejected from the court. Reese had been subject to frustrations, which resulted in her committing five personal fouls. 

The fifth foul had happened late during the game, in which official Charles Watson had called. Consequently, Reese had gone to the official to express her opinion to which she received a technical foul. As she was leaving, she waved her hand at the official and was given a technical foul which resulted in an automatic ejection.

Speaking on the incident, Maj Forsberg the lead official said that both technical fouls came from Reese behavior. She explained the first foul was for addressing the official disrespectfully. The second foul was for waving her in a demonstration of dismissals.

According to the WNBA rules if a player receives three technical fouls in a season, they would be fined $200 per foul. If a player get between 4-6 technical foul they would be fined $400 per foul. If a players get 7 or more technical foul, they will fined $800 per foul and subject to an automatic suspension for a game. 

According to the rules, the rookie is expected to pay $400 in fines. However the Chicago Sky player is not expected to pay the fine as Lonzo Ball offered to pay on her behalf. Taking to X account, the Chicago Bulls guard who was at the game spoke on matter and his intentions.

The Liberty defeated the Sky team that had defeated them in both the regular season and the preseason by the final score of 88-75 on Tuesday. Reese managed a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double before her forced exit while shooting only 3-of-12 from the floor.

With 39 personal foul counts involving both Liberty and Sky, Tuesday’s referees were undoubtedly busy. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Marina Mabrey each received one technical foul in addition to Reese’s following a third-quarter altercation.

This is not the first time the rookie would have be subject to a fine. On Saturday June 1, 2024 after the Chicago Sky suffer defeat from the Indians Pacers Reese refused to attend the media conference. Reese who had a college rivalry with Caitlin Clark, was clearly annoyed about losing to her.

In response to boycotting the interview, the league fined Reese $1000. Additionally, the WNBA further issued a $5000 fine to the Chicago Sky for failing to ensure their players fulfilled their media obligations.
