Moving up in rank and becoming an official at the White House usually comes with increased exposure to the public eye. Therefore, it comes as no surprise whenever past statements or social media posts of a new recruit come to light and they are attacked for them. This new White House official’s story is no different.

Tyler Cherry worked at the Department of Interior for Secretary Deb Haaland for three years. However, he was promoted in June to associate communications director at the White House. While this is good news for him, it quickly came with a lot of controversy once he was announced.

According to several articles, Cherry had been on social media in the past few years, having views and opinions that do not correlate with those of the administration he now serves in the White House. His social media posts contain content supporting Palestine and antagonizing Israel, attacking the police, and promoting “Russiagate.”

However, Cherry seems unbothered by people unearthing these posts, as he has now downplayed them and said that they do not reflect his views at this time. So, how bad are these posts that have caused him a lot of backlash in the past weeks?

First, there was a tweet (on X, formerly Twitter) back in 2015 where Cherry wrote that he was “praying” quite hard for an end to a “capitalistic police state” in the U.S., which he claimed has been purely motivated by several forms of racial bias. This tweet was posted during the huge wave of riots in Baltimore after Freddie Gray, a Black man, was killed while he was in police custody.

Some months after that, Cherry put out another tweet, which was also directed to the U.S. police departments. He wrote that modern-day policing has now become a form of evolution of lynch mobs and slave patrols. Furthermore, the current White House official also wrote a good number of posts that were loudly in support of Palestine and against Israel. On July 25, 2014, he wrote, “Cheersing in bars to ending the occupation of Palestine – no shame and f— your glares #ISupportGaza #FreePalestine.”

There are several other posts that showed his unwavering support for Palestine and his disapproval of Israel. However, those weren’t all he wrote. In another couple of posts, Cherry accuses the Republicans in the U.S. of being overly focused on “white grievance politics.” He also called for the government at that time to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Therefore, people from across the country, politicians and critics alike, have expressed their concern about such a person being in the White House. To address all these concerns about his person and intentions at the White House, Cherry put out a statement on X. He wrote that he had noticed people were starting to bring up his past social media posts and had to clarify his stance for the public to understand.

According to him, his past social media posts do not reflect his current views, as he was much younger when he made them. He also reiterated that he fully supported the Biden Administration’s agenda and would continue to carry out his work effectively and efficiently. He promised to continue to focus on the country’s climate and environmental policies to protect the future of the U.S.
