Former President Donald Trump’s conspicuous silence regarding the death of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny has drawn criticism and raised questions about his stance on Russia if he were to secure a second term.
Despite swift condemnation from Western leaders, including President Joe Biden, who squarely blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for Navalny’s demise, Trump has refrained from directly addressing the issue.
Navalny’s death occurred while he was imprisoned in Russia, prompting widespread condemnation from Western leaders. However, Trump, who has a history of praising Putin, remained noticeably silent for days. Even during a lengthy campaign rally in Michigan over the weekend, Trump made no mention of Navalny’s death.
Instead, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to post about what he perceives as the deterioration of America, alleging political persecution and unfair treatment by left-leaning politicians, prosecutors, and judges.

He compared his situation to Nelson Mandela’s and lamented America’s supposed decline. Trump’s posts on Truth Social did not directly address Navalny’s death or Putin’s role in it. It was only after several days that Trump finally mentioned Navalny’s name in a retweet of an article comparing Biden’s actions toward Trump to Putin’s treatment of Navalny.
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican primary candidate and vocal critic of Trump, called on him to address Navalny’s death directly, labeling Navalny a “hero” and placing blame squarely on Putin.
Similarly, former Wyoming GOP Representative Liz Cheney warned against what she termed the “Putin-wing” of the Republican Party, emphasizing the need to prevent it from gaining control of the White House.

During Trump’s tenure as president, he notably refrained from condemning Russia for its actions, even in the face of overwhelming evidence, such as when Navalny was poisoned in 2020. Trump’s reluctance to condemn Russia and Putin, coupled with his dismissive response to Navalny’s death, has sparked concern and criticism from within his party.
As the 2024 election cycle heats up, Trump’s handling of foreign policy, particularly regarding Russia, is emerging as a significant point of contention. The silence from the former president on this matter continues to fuel speculation and debate about his potential approach to Russia in the future.
