In a tragic incident near the U.S.-Mexico border, the identities of the three individuals who lost their lives in a National Guard helicopter crash have been released by officials.
The crash, which occurred just before 4 p.m. local time on Friday near Rio Grande City, Texas, claimed the lives of two National Guard members and one Border Patrol agent, while another National Guardsman sustained injuries.
The National Guard Lakota UH-72 helicopter was involved in routine operations as part of the federal Southwest border support mission when the crash took place. The Department of Defense’s Joint Task Force North reported the incident, and the subsequent investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway.
The fallen National Guard members were identified as Chief Warrant Officer 2 Casey Frankoski, 28, of Rensselaer, New York, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 John Grassia, 30, of Schenectady. Their selfless service and dedication to their duties are being remembered by their colleagues and the community. The injured soldier’s identity has not been disclosed.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed the death of Border Patrol Agent Chris Luna in the helicopter crash. In a press release, Secretary Mayorkas expressed his condolences, stating, “Every single day, our Border Patrol Agents place themselves in harm’s way so that the rest of us can be safe and secure.”
President Joe Biden also paid tribute to the fallen individuals, acknowledging their sacrifice in a statement. He highlighted the commitment of these brave Americans who dedicated their lives to protecting the nation.
President Biden remarked, “They signed up knowing the risks and believing in the mission of serving their fellow Americans by keeping our nation safe. Our gratitude is profound, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
