The initiative is named the Managed Alcohol Program (MAP). It gives homeless people measured amounts of alcohol to safeguard them from experiencing severe substance detoxification.

The goal of the initiative is to stabilize participants and keep them out of requiring urgent hospitalization.

The MAP is housed in a former guesthouse in the Tenderloin neighborhood. It was renovated to become a 20-bed structure with a yearly budget of five million dollars.
