Experts say ending parole will strengthen border security and solve immigration crisis

With each passing day, the migration crisis in the U.S. gets considerably worse. From the southern border especially, thousands of migrants are crossing illegally. This has caused a lot of inconvenience and frustration for the residents of those areas and the country.

In addition, it is shutting down legal immigration and international trade, bit by bit. In Eagle Pass, Texas, authorities have suspended all vehicular traffic until further notice. Still in Texas, officials have also shunted freight train traffic in El Paso to a complete standstill.

In San Diego, California, the government has stopped all pedestrian crossings, and in Lukeville, Arizona, they closed the port of entry. This is affecting numerous states, causing several significant problems as well. It is only getting worse as the government has not found a permanent solution to this problem.

To many Americans, President Joe Biden is not taking this issue seriously enough. Because of this, Senate Republicans are negotiating with the White House and Senate Democrats over changes to the country’s law. They plan to force Biden to take the crisis seriously with this move.

However, there is not much these Republicans can do at this point because the President holds the power of parole. With his autonomy of this power, Biden can quickly reverse any moves the Republicans make. Therefore, this creates a huge loophole that can invalidate any new bills.

Surprisingly, the White House recently agreed to two huge compromises. First, they decided to tighten the “credible fear” standard that migrants must reach to hear their asylum cases from an immigration judge. This means that each migrant has to have a valid reason for fleeing their home country, and it has to meet the U.S. standard of credible fear.

Second, the White House agreed to create a new expulsion authority for migrants. This allows Border Patrol to send illegal migrants back without getting a “credible fear” interview from an asylum officer. These two concessions might work, but there is a catch.

There is no way to force the President to use these powers if he chooses not to. The Biden administration is known for being very lenient to the migrants, unlike Trump’s administration, which was a lot stricter. Most people believe this is the reason for this massive influx of migrants from various countries.

Also, there are no real repercussions for illegally crossing the borders anymore. Instead, the Border Patrol takes them in, processes their information, and gives them an interview with an asylum officer.

This process usually takes a full day per person. With the increase in immigrants now, this process is severely affected. There aren’t enough patrol officers or interviewers to handle everyone properly.

Furthermore, there isn’t enough space to hold these migrants. Most migrants go undocumented because of this, and it doesn’t help the situation at hand. Many democrats now agree with republicans that this situation needs to be adequately addressed. They are also trying to get the President to enforce stricter immigration laws that will benefit everyone involved.
