However, the young man told Glover that he had been listening to him since an early age, something that surprised Glover. Glover’s art has always been most raw when it comes to Childish Gambino. His television creative output, which includes the hit show “Atlanta,” leans toward the cerebral and abstract.

Additionally, he has played supporting roles in massive franchises including “The Lion King,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and several Spider-Man vehicles in his largest cinematic roles. Glover’s early themes in his projects and debut album attracted fans and critics alike. Growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness in Atlanta and attending a majority-white high school, he challenged stereotypes about black culture by responding to critics who labeled him an “Oreo.”

Glover embraced the 2010s white hipster culture with Pitchfork-favorite music, A.P.C. jeans, and a nasal Lil Wayne-like vocal style. Before the internet, Glover struggled to find like-minded people. Glover said he once attended an N.E.R.D. show with my girlfriend, only to discover that they were the only black people who attended.

Consequently, Glover stated that during the event, he felt out of place, like a stranger among the crowd. “Atlanta,” a reflection of Glover’s frustrations with the music industry, gave him creative control and featured a team of young black creatives. As the show thrived, Gambino’s music became more inventive. In 2016, Childish Gambino’s album “Awaken My Love” debuted with the hit “Redbone,” earning him his first Grammy for best traditional R&B performance.
