On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, six bodies were discovered. There have been claims of cyanide discoveries in the blood and cups of four Vietnamese and two Americans found dead in Bangkok.

According to the report, Lt. Gen. Thiti Sangsawang, the chief of Bangkok police, recognized the victims. They were made up of three males and three women. An unidentified Lumpini police station official also reported that they were discovered to be foaming at the mouth.

Medical Experts Discovered the Cause of Death

At a press conference, Chanchai Sittipunt, the director of Bangkok’s King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, stated that a medical team had verified that cyanide was present in the victims’ blood.

According to Sittipunt, doctors were unable to determine any other plausible cause of death, and the results are compatible with cyanide poisoning. More testing will be necessary to verify the preliminary findings, he said.

The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok is a famous hotel at a prominent crossroads in the capital. It is home to shopping centers, government buildings, and public transport, and is where the victims were discovered.

When food was brought into the room, the six had been seen for the last time alive. The lunch was delivered to one woman by the staff, and the others appeared one by one on security footage not long after. The door was locked from the inside, and no one else appeared to be leaving. They were discovered by a cleaner in the afternoon when they neglected to check out of the room.

Cyanide Poisoning

The Bangkok deputy police chief, Noppasin Punsawat, stated that they were between the ages of 37 and 56. According to him, the situation seems to be personal and won’t affect travelers’ safety.

According to Noppasin, who cited information from family, a husband and wife who were among the deceased may have had a reason for investing roughly 10 million baht ($278,000) with two of the other victims.

The group may have been gathering to resolve the issue because the investment was intended to be used to construct a hospital in Japan. Authorities claim that one of the six killed the others, but they did not identify the culprit.

Two Americans Found Dead in Luxury Hotel Room

According to Lt. Gen. Thiti Sangsawang, there were two bodies in the bedroom and four in the living room. According to him, two of the individuals seemed to have made an attempt to open the door but fell before they did.

The meal plates they had ordered were still wrapped in clingfilm and seemed to have remained untouched. Their bags were prepared. After searching their bags overnight, the police reported that nothing illicit had been discovered within.

The media identified the group as consisting of US citizens Sherine Chong, 56, and Dang Hung Van. As well as Vietnamese nationals Thi Nguyen Phuong, 46, her husband Hong Pham Thanh, 49, Thi Nguyen Phuong Lan, 47, and Dinh Tran Phu, 37.

Furthermore, to create a timeline of their visit to Bangkok, police are examining more extensive CCTV footage. According to Srettha Thavisin, the prime minister of Thailand, the FBI was assisting with the inquiry since two of the suspects were citizens of the United States.

What is the Reaction of Cyanide?

Cyanide enters the bloodstream immediately after exposure. Smaller doses of cyanide are metabolized by the body differently than larger doses. The body may convert cyanide, in tiny doses, into thiocyanate, which is less toxic and eliminated in the urine. Small quantities of cyanide can also mix with another substance in the body to create vitamin B12. This supports the health of red blood cells and nerves.

According to research, the body’s capacity to convert cyanide into thiocyanate is overwhelmed by high dosages. When cells are exposed to large amounts of cyanide, they are unable to use oxygen and finally die. The most vulnerable organ systems to cyanide poisoning are the heart, lungs, and central nervous system.

Further Information About the Death

According to Noppasin, they arrived in Thailand between July 4 and July 12, 2024, and checked into separate hotel rooms. Five of them were seen on CCTV leaving their rooms and putting their belongings in Room 502, which Chong had reserved, he added.

At first, investigators searched for a seventh individual who shared the same hotel reservation as the other five members. According to Noppasin, the individual was a Vietnamese national’s younger sister. She left for Da Nang, Vietnam on July 4, 2024, and returned to Thailand on July 10, 2024.
