The actor, who appeared alongside Randolph in the boarding school-set drama “The Holdovers,” has many fans talking. He appeared emotional as his co-star accepted the prize for Best Supporting Actress. Randolph won the award for her role as a grieving mother in the film.

Similarly, Paul Giamatti bagged a nomination for Best Actor for playing a curmudgeonly professor. However, the Best Supporting Actress award, presented by five previous winners, had everyone in their feelings. Each actor who presented the award paid tribute to a different nominee.

Randolph was competing in the category against “Barbie’s” America Ferrera, “Nyad’s” Jodie Foster, “Oppenheimer’s” Emily Blunt, and “The Color Purple’s” Danielle Brooks. Introducing Randolph, “12 Years a Slave” Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o paid tribute to “The Holdovers” star.

“Your performance is also in tribute to your grandmother whose glasses you wore in the film,” she said. “What an honor to see the world through her eyes and yours.” At this point, Randolph was welling up and fighting back tears.

When Nyong’o announced her as the award winner, Giamatti assisted her to the stage. While delivering her emotional speech, Randolph lost the fight against her tears. “For so long, I have always wanted to be different,” the 37-year-old actor said.

“And now I realize I just needed to be myself, and I thank you for seeing me.” During her speech, Randolph spoke about her acting career and how she started small. “I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started as a singer,” she said.

“And my mother said to me, go across that street to that theater department; there’s something for you there.” “And I thank my mother for doing that,” she continued. “I thank the people who have been there for me, ushered and guided me.”

“I am so grateful to you beautiful people out there,” Randolph concluded amid tears. Paul Giamatti appeared crying as the camera cut back to the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Giamatti also bagged a nomination in the Best Actor Race this year, like Randolph.

Cillian Murphy, who bagged a nomination for his role in Christopher Nolan’s biopic “Oppenheimer,” was up against Giamatti in the category. Before the ceremony, “Oppenheimer” was the favorite to take home Best Picture. The 2023 movie was up against films such as “Poor Things.”

It also competed against “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Besides Paul Giamatti and his tears, the 2024 Oscars had other notable moments.

In the opening monologue, host Jimmy Kimmel annoyed Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr. Kimmel made a joke about the Marvel star’s history of substance abuse. Also, Downey took a jab at his work with Marvel in his Best Supporting Actor award acceptance speech.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling performed a live rendition of “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie” to a hugely enthusiastic reception. The multi-talented actor appeared in an all-pink ensemble, sticking to the “Barbie” theme during his performance.
