Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has lashed out at former President Donald Trump. Haley criticized Trump for his attempts to hinder a bipartisan border bill aimed at addressing the worrying conditions at the southern border.
She made the comments during a session on NBC’s Meet the Press. “Donald Trump, the last thing he needs to do is tell them to wait to pass the border deal until the election,” she said.
Similarly, she added her voice to call for all sides of the political divide to reach a compromise on the issue. “We can’t wait one more day,” she said.
One key voice that has been missing in the chorus is that of the former President. Trump hasn’t been a fan of the deal since day one. He has also urged Republican members of parliament not to have a hand in its passage.

His reasons? The bill doesn’t capture all Republican preferences. Trump will only throw his weight behind bills that will advance most of his party’s interests and wishes.
“Please blame it on me, please, because they were getting ready to pass a very bad bill,” was Trump’s comments on the legislative move. ‘I’d rather have no bill than a bad bill,” he continued. He made these comments at a recent Las Vegas rally.
Haley’s comments shocked many, given her seeming reluctance to criticize the former President. Although she had made several critical comments towards Trump, she had done so with more restraint than many expected.
But on the heels of two primary defeats to the former President and her being his sole challenger at this point, she has little or nothing to lose by challenging his policies.

The crisis at the border is Biden’s weakest point going into the 2024 elections. Trump has been looking to cash in on Biden’s failure in that regard. According to Haley, Trump wants to delay the bill to keep Americans angry at the Biden administration.
But Trump gave a different reason for his opposition to the legislative effort. He believes that the bill is an emergency move by Biden to recover some political goodwill just before the elections. “The fact is that if Joe Biden really wanted to secure the border, he doesn’t really need a bill,” Trump said.
The bill has been a major source of controversy since it was introduced. Democrat and Republican legislature members have traded words and exchanged disagreements over elements of the bill.

Sen. Chris Murphy, the Democrat lead negotiator for the bill, expressed confidence in its passage. In his opinion, the only obstacle would be Trump’s influence on Republican legislature members.
Murphy announced that the bill’s text should be ready in a few weeks. President Biden has also urged a speedy passage as well as the cooperation of Republicans.
Nikki Haley’s support of the bill is a big plus to Biden’s aspirations. Even more refreshing for the President and Democrats is her willingness to challenge Trump, the most influential member of her party.
