It may be a new year, but it’s still the same old world. A few days into 2024, a crime involving up to 100 people made headlines. Now, the residents are clamoring for the local officials to do something.

This mob, comprised of 100 loot-thirsty people, deliberately decided to crash a Kia into a small bakery in Compton, California. A report states, “When they got to the locked store, a white Kia backed into the front doors, clearing an entryway for the crowd of pillagers to get to their loot.”

After they gained entry, they ransacked the store. It was a successful night, the result of a good plan. They gathered in the area for the illegal street takeover around 3 a.m. Tuesday, January 2.

Then, they made the mile-long trek to Ruben’s Bakery & Mexican Food. Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Capt. Melissa Ramirez says that the looters stole a variety of things. Some include meat, general groceries, and even lottery tickets.

Police reportedly got alerts about it just before the looting happened. The alerts said a car was on fire and a street takeover was underway. But that did not help, and the thieves had their way.

It sounds like a violent incident. However, according to residents, such crime is all too common. “They’ve been out there running amok, tearing our streets up,” one resident lamented. “It’s just like, when is this gonna stop?”

Another said, “So sick and tired of hearing this crap every single day.”

Compton Democratic Mayor Emma Sharif stated at the meeting between the residents and officials that “Ensuring the safety of businesses and residents in our city is our top priority.” She also urged city council members to sign an ordinance to increase citations for those participating in these street takeovers.

Unfortunately, even that was not enough to assuage the local voters’ anger. One of the grossly unhappy residents was a woman named Cindi Enamorado. She has suffered from a similar event.

Her brother was killed by an automobile fleeing a street takeover last year, and she wanted to know how officials would solve this new problem.

“Every time a street is taking over, we relive our nightmare, a nightmare we have been reliving almost going on a year now, and I would hate for anything to happen to another family. I want to know, what’s the plan?” Enamorado said.

She went on to say, “We need to create a firewall, we need to stop allowing these kids that are coming from other cities that terrorize and vandalize the city, we need to take this as seriously as it is because, at this moment, it’s only a matter of time before another life is lost.”

According to her, April 2024 saw youths making fun of her brother’s death amid a street takeover. While he struggled, they were busy “Spectating, recording, posting him online and bumping music,” making a joke about her brother’s passing.

In the same meeting, she also revealed what may have been on the minds of many of the locals. Such street takeovers require planning. Enamorado called it “organized crime” and stated unequivocally that it has to end.
