GOP Congresswoman Kat Cammack took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, April 20, 2024, after the Senate passed the Ukrainian aid bill. The GOP lawmaker announced that her team is working on legislation restricting the display of foreign nations’ emblems inside the House of Representatives.
The congresswoman’s statement comes in light of Democratic lawmakers waving the Ukrainian flag on the same day. Notably, the Democrats were celebrating the House passing foreign aid legislation, allocating $60.84 billion to Ukraine. Despite the fierce GOP opposition, the bill’s passing was a major victory.
Like Cammack, House Speaker Mike Johnson also rebuked the move. Johnson, who relied on bipartisan support to make the bills go through, condemned the display of Ukrainian flags while speaking to reporters. “These are not normal times, here in the House or around the world, as we all know,” he said.
“We had a disturbance here on the House floor. I just want to say simply what I think most people around the country understand and agree: We should only wave one flag on the House floor.” He added, “And I think we know which flag that is.”

Cammack, a U.S. Representative from Florida, shared a video recording of the House proceedings on X. The video showed many lawmakers waving Ukrainian flags in the chamber on Saturday. “Watching American representatives pass out & wave Ukrainian flags in the United States House of Representatives chamber infuriated me,” she said.
“As we speak, my team is drafting legislation that will prohibit the display of foreign nations’ flags on the House floor,” she wrote.” Cammack added, “If there is one room in our country that should only have the American flag present, it is this room.”
Like Cammack, other Republican Lawmakers condemned the move. Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La) shared another clip of the Democrats waving the flag on the House floor on X. “All Democrats waving Ukrainian flags on your House floor when the bill passed,” Higgins wrote.

“Sending another 60B of your treasure to fund the war machine,” he added. “100% deficit money. Borrowed on the backs of your children. Wake up, America.” While the Republican Representatives expected X users to support them, the script flipped on their heads.
Instead, X users brought up the topic of the January 6, 2021 riot. They pointed to the incident where Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Hill, carrying the Confederate flags. Users slammed the conservative legislators, pointing out their hypocrisy.
“Weird. You were cool with these flags in the Capitol,” wrote a user who shared pictures of the riot. “You didn’t seem to have a problem when they took down the American flag,” another stated. “And put a Trump one up during the insurrection.”

“I think someone is just salty they lost,” jibed a user, referring to the Republican opposition to the funding bills. “From just the video, I wouldn’t have recognized Ukrainian flags,” another X user wrote. “What dominates my view is the large U.S. Flag front and center.”
Furthermore, the user noted that the Republican Representatives “seem a bit oversensitive” about the bill the House passed. “Maybe you wouldn’t mind so much if the Russian flag was there,” wrote another. “Since you pretty much voted to give Ukraine over to them.”
