If you’re searching for a new home, you’re either a renter or looking to be a homeowner. Either way, you want to make the best decision you can. That way, you don’t have to return to the market later, looking for a better place.

When house hunting, some boxes need to be checked off. People tend to gravitate towards places near cities that offer this combination: low crime rates, excellent school systems, a thriving local community, and access to quality health care.

In California, there are two such cities that people think fit that bill, at least to a moderate extent. They are Irvine and San Diego. Researchers who arrived at this conclusion based it on different aspects. For example, economic opportunities, quality of life, diversity, and the city’s future.

Irvine is the home of the University of California, and it is one of the best places to live. Not only does it offer a bustling city with great economic opportunities, but residents also enjoy access to some of the most significant and diverse shopping and dining opportunities.

That’s not all; Irvine, located 40 miles southwest of Los Angeles, has many parks and trails to explore. It has over 60 public parks, 400 miles of bike trails, and many accessible beaches.

The parks, trails, and natural wildlands make up more than one-third of the city, making Irvine a natural magnet for nature lovers. It is also one of the safest cities to live in.

According to FBI data, Irvine was named one of the safest cities of its size to settle in. It has the lowest crime rate in the nation despite its population of 250,000 or more.

Aside from the low crime rates, Irvine also boasts a great education system, rated among the best in California, and a high employment rate. There are over 19,000 businesses in the city, all of which have contributed steadily to keeping the city’s unemployment rate at a deficient 2.8%.

The other city that gives Irvine a run for its money is San Diego, often called the “Birthplace of California.” San Diego has been known as “America’s Finest City” for years.

It boasts stunning beaches, natural habitat sanctuaries, a thriving downtown, and temperate weather all year. San Diego residents enjoy excellent social infrastructure, including the massive San Diego Zoo, 15 museums, a horticultural center, the Olde Globe Theater, and many more. This means that whatever your fancy is, there is always something to do.

Like Irvine, the city houses almost 1.4 million people and has a promising job market. The Pacific Fleet of the U.S. Navy is one of the largest employers in the town, which leaves the unemployment rate at a respectable 3.1%.

Other notable employers include IT communications companies like Qualcomm and Nokia, as well as a growing number of healthcare and biotechnical companies. Another great reason people flock to this city is that it is one of the best housing markets in California.

Unlike the millions of dollars it will cost you to own a starter house in San Francisco or Los Angeles, San Diego’s medium house price is $963,261.

It beats Irvine, whose medium house price is $1,300,651, in that regard. San Diego is also attractive for families thanks to the city’s robust school system. It is home to one of the most highly regarded branches of the University of California and is focused on providing sound higher education choices for young adults.
