The summer always seems to affect the U.S. postal service. Either by luck or sheer dedication, 36% of the annual holidays celebrated by the U.S. Postal Service come in the summer. During these holidays, the mail company closes and becomes unavailable at its offices.

The holidays are Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. However, despite the off days, the postal service might have figured out ways to ensure more days off, perhaps the whole summer. The organization announced to all patrons that it would not be in operation due to “safety concerns.”

USPS prioritizes the safety of its staff and clients, which is also the reason for its reoccurring service interruptions. Between April and May 2023, the organization closed two of its offices for “security reasons.” On Friday, June 21, 2023, the USPS also warned Oklahoma and Arkansas of its temporary suspension.

According to a statement by USPS spokeswoman Becky Hernandez, the office in Oklahoma was closed because of a weather incident. Apparently, a weekend storm had affected the building roof, causing sizeable damage. However, a fire caused the closure of the Arkansas office.

The postal service has just announced the closure of more offices. To pass notices faster and over large areas, the postal department has updated its alert system with two new features.

On Sunday, June 23, 2023, the agency sent an alert informing the state of North Carolina that its office in Kinston would be seizing all operations. On Sunday, June 30, 2023, USPS informed Ohio state residents about the temporary closing of its office in the state.

They claimed the closure of both locations was due to safety issues and concerns. After the storm, the North Carolina office was closed for repairs. However, a tornado, not a storm, damaged the area, according to reports.

The reports stated that the storm system damaged the roof of the post office located in Kinston Plaza, with gusts as high as 100 miles per hour. Water damage has also affected the postal facility, according to WITN’s interview with Gram Spear, vice president of Perry Management, the company that operates the plaza.

To maintain normalcy, the agency requests clients go to the Kinston Main Post Office on East Caswell Street for all activities during the shutdown. However, they have not issued a local press release on the shutdown of the Ohio office.

According to the Postal Service, on June 15, a tornado also struck the Ohio plant, damaging its roof. Reopening plans are still in the works, but the news source stated that repairs are now in progress.

According to USPS guidelines, the Toledo Main Post Office on South Saint Clair Avenue is where clients of the Point Place Post Office can get retail services during this shutdown.
