Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene made an unexpected statement on Laken Riley’s terrible murder. The controversial lawmaker made the comment during a recent Homeland Security Committee budget hearing with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“It’s treason because these people have declared war on our citizens by raping our women, our children, and murdering people,” Greene said. “Like Laken Riley, you’re familiar with her, right?”

During the hearing, Greene appeared to advocate for Laken Riley’s deportation. She said, “You should have deported her so that she could be alive today. Her parents would have appreciated that.” The comment left many shocked, highlighting the uncertainty of Greene’s statement, whether it referred to Riley or her killer.

For context, Laken Riley was a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University’s nursing school in Georgia. She was assaulted and brutally murdered on February 22, 2024, while running by an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, Jose Ibarra, who has been charged with her murder.

Greene, on several occasions, used Riley’s terrible death as a political talking point to emphasize her position on illegal immigration. She has called President Joe Biden’s immigration policies “corruption at its deepest level.” Also, she accused Democrats of “treason” for their handling of immigration issues.

According to Greene, these measures have resulted in crimes perpetrated by undocumented immigrants, such as rape and murder. The congresswoman’s controversial words have sparked condemnation from a variety of sources.

Also, she led the House Republicans’ impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, charging him with breaching immigration rules and impeding Congress’ probe. The impeachment campaign was successful in the House, making Mayorkas the first Cabinet member in 150 years to face such.

During the State of the Union, Greene wore a MAGA hat and a shirt that read “SAY HER NAME.” She also yelled at President Biden to “say her name” while he was giving his speech.

Despite the congresswoman’s clear commitment to border security, her recent statement has generated controversy about immigration policy and its influence on public safety. Following the incident, the Department of Homeland Security supported Secretary Mayorkas’ tenure, calling the impeachment process a “sham.”

“Despite warnings from fellow Republicans that this baseless impeachment effort ‘distorts the Constitution,’ House Republicans continue to ignore the facts and undermine the Constitution by wasting even more time on this sham impeachment in the Senate,” a DHS spokesperson said.

On March 7, Rep. Mike Collins introduced the Laken Riley Act. The statute necessitates the arrest of any migrant who commits burglary or theft. Despite the “politicking,” Laken Riley’s tragic death remains a sad reminder of the complexity surrounding immigration.

It highlights the need for effective policy conversations that combine security and compassion.
