Authorities stormed the Columbia University premises in NYC and took over a hundred protesters into custody. This has brought tensions into the Palestinian solidarity camp. As the academic year draws to an end, higher education institutions throughout the country are on standby for potential political breakouts and the possible reactions they may provoke.

Scores of protesters were picked up at Yale and New York University for condemning the ongoing attack on Gaza for months. Almost one hundred individuals were detained at the University of Southern California, and officers in protective devices and mounted patrol proceeded to diffuse a group of similar protests at the Texas University in Austin.

Police arrested twenty-eight people, including academics. In addition to that, they employed means to disperse a pro-Palestinian demonstration at Emory University, Atlanta. 4 cops were injured, and one hundred and eight more demonstrators were taken into custody at Boston’s Emerson College.

Additionally, Virginia Tech said that about ninety-one individuals, fifty-four of whom were learners, were detained and convicted of intrusion after disobeying law enforcement’s orders to leave.

Although the recent wave of detentions has raised more concern than expected, American higher education institutions have been trying to end learner protests. The attack, which happened in Oct. 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, resulted in over one thousand two hundred deaths and hundreds of captives. The school authorities, with the aid of law enforcement, academic bans and eviction.

Students and academic staff strongly held opinions have been further stirred by Israel’s deadly response in Gaza, which, according to a report from the Ministry of Health, has resulted in the deaths of over thirty-four thousand Palestinians.

Management has frequently condemned school demonstrations as a nuisance despite the widespread determination among American learners to adopt harmless approaches. Some leadership, such as those at Indiana University, George Washington University, and California State Polytechnic University’s Humboldt, the school’s premises, have decided to introduce corrective measures and bring in law enforcement if the situation persists.

In a report by Zach Greenberg of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, or FIRE, an unbiased, charitable freedom organization that defends free speech in colleges. School management has woken up from supposed slumber and seems to act more swiftly recently than they did half a year ago against protestors in places of learning. Palestine Legal’s executive director, Dima Khalidi, said that listening and engaging the learners at the moment will go a long way than enforcing strict measures. For months, a Palestinian lawyer defended learners against university-initiated punishment.

The law enforcement response to the ongoing demonstrations in schools within the country against the war has added to the issues and increased worries and fear, she added. In addition, The leaners are only requesting you lend a listening ear to their plight, to the killings and people being deprived of food, shelter, and basic amenities because of the war going on. Over thirty-five thousand Palestinians are dead and counting.

According to Zach, protesters are no longer scared of the consequences of noncompliance with the law. Well, that’s nothing new; it is a persisting practice among U.S. college learners, which can be attributed to the fact that learners are ready to face the outcome of whatever transpires.
