U-Haul Report Shows Texas Had the Largest Influx of Movers in 2023

Each year, thousands of people move and relocate across America. People are moving for various reasons, such as the economy and security. Texas is one of many states people choose to relocate to. U-Haul’s Growth Index report shows it has the largest number of new residents for three consecutive years.

The popular moving equipment rental company analyzes one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in states or cities annually. It compares it with the net gain of trucks leaving those states or cities. For 2023, Texas ranked number one on the list, followed closely by Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

U-Haul’s report shows that more than 2 million one-way U-Haul transactions occur annually within the U.S. and Canada. While it shows how many people chose to handle their moving themselves in 2023, it is not a clear indication of the total number of people that moved within the year. U-Haul’s report doesn’t account for residents who opted to use other rental companies or didn’t need a moving company in the first place.

U-Haul’s report says their findings do not “correlate directly to population or economic growth.” The states that the report indicated had the largest number of movers in 2023 are Texas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Virginia, Nevada, Vermont, Utah, Wyoming, and Delaware.

Additionally, data from the United States Census Bureau show that the South is the fastest-growing region, with a growth of over 1.3 million people in 2022.

Back in 2021, the South grew by 1.1%. One of the main factors for this growth was domestic and international migration. Similarly, since 2018, the South’s year-to-year net domestic migration has been on a steady climb. The most recent data indicate that the South is the most populous region in the U.S., with 128.7 million residents.

Furthermore, according to the U.S. Census data, Texas has experienced more population growth than any other state since 2022. More than 668,000 people relocated to Texas from other states in 2022.

Although about 500,000 people moved out of the state, it gained over 154,000 new residents. Over 50% of the U-Haul traffic in and out of Texas comprises equipment rentals arriving in the state.

In a news release, John “J.T.” Taylor, U-Haul International president, said, “While one-way transactions in 2023 remained below the record-breaking levels we witnessed immediately following the pandemic, we continued to see many of the same geographical trends from U-Haul customers moving between states.”

While it’s a good sign that many Americans consider Texas a great state to live in, the state is struggling to keep its population under control. Gov. Abbott is currently sending buses of illegal migrants to other states and cities to ensure that the facilities available are adequate for the residents of the state. Nonetheless, the trend of people moving to Texas instead of so many others doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon.
