Earning a mouthwatering salary should be enough reason not to owe the government money. This stands true for many people but not Stacy Davis Gates, the progressive Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) president.
Davis Gates earns “at least” $289,000 per year in salaries. However, according to the Illinois Policy Institute (IPI), she still owes thousands in unpaid utility bills.
The non-profit group says she owes Chicago $5,579 in unpaid water, sewer, and trash bills as of November 7, 2023. The group alleges that Davis Gates started a payment plan for the unpaid bills in July 2023. However, she quickly defaulted.

Where she currently stands on the repayment is unclear. The IPI report claims this latest revelation is just another evidence of Davis Gates’ hypocrisy.
“She spurns responsibility and accountability both in her role as CTU president and in her daily life while pushing for ‘wealthy’ taxpayers to pay their ‘fair share,'” the report says.
It also adds that Davis Gates’ bills were only a tiny part of the $6.4 billion owed in unpaid fees, fines, and other debts people still owe the city. The value has been increasing since the year 1990.
Davis Gates’ unpaid bills are the latest instance of what critics call “hypocrisy” from her. In November, she got in trouble for back taxes due to an “unlawful deduction” she took on a home in Indiana.
She filed paperwork claiming the Indiana home as her primary residence in 2007 as a Chicago Public School teacher. She also applied for a homestead tax exemption for the house, which has been active since then.

According to IPI, the homestead deduction allows her to pay four times less in Indiana property taxes. More evidence of her hypocrisy is that her son attends a private school.
In the past, she was an outspoken critic of them. When she was pressed during an appearance on CNN about her decision, with one host noting that she once likened them to “segregation academies,” she said: “I didn’t speak out against private schools. I spoke out against school choice. School choice and private schools are two different entities.”

Before facing criticism for her son’s school, Davis Gates’ stance was that having her children in public schools “legitimizes” her position within the teachers union. She said she could not advocate for public schools if that did not happen.
In a Chicago Magazine article last year, Davis Gates said, “I can’t advocate on behalf of public education without it taking root in my household.” Times have changed since then, and Davis Gates has gone back on her words.
Is this enough reason to have her canceled as a hypocrite? We’ll let you decide.
