Senator Eva Burch is at the forefront of fighting for women’s right to have an abortion. In a recent speech at the state senate, she revealed to her colleagues and the public that she was planning to get an abortion. According to her, her pregnancy is no longer viable.
Therefore, to protect her life, she had no choice but to terminate it. This was a shocking revelation that many weren’t expecting. However, the democratic senator felt the need to share this news for everyone to see the practical effects of abortion restrictions.
In her speech, Burch describes her “rough journey” with fertility and mentions a previous miscarriage. As a former nurse practitioner who worked at a women’s health clinic, she has firsthand experience in how women’s health matters work.
As a mother of two, she also understands the importance of lifting the restrictions Arizona has on women’s reproductive rights. Furthermore, this would not be Butch’s first abortion. In 2022, she had one while she was running for office. This was also because her pregnancy was no longer viable, and she had to prioritize her health.

Many also remember that she mentioned this in her campaign trial. Therefore, the 43-year-old mother has had a front-row seat to the advantages of a proper abortion. She also noted that she wants the public to know that her struggles are similar to those of thousands of other women nationwide.
Taking away their right to abort when necessary is detrimental to their physical and mental well-being and can even result in a loss of life. “It was an opportunity for me to highlight what we’re experiencing here in Arizona and how the laws that we pass in Arizona actually do impact people in practice and not just in theory,” Burch said Tuesday in an interview with The Associated Press in her legislative office.

“If the Arizona Legislature is not going to operate in reality, then the people of Arizona need to have an opportunity to take control of some of those decisions for themselves,” she added.
Without a doubt, Burch’s speech gives a new perspective and adds proof that anyone could require an abortion. To her fellow lawmakers, she showed them that the anti-abortion law could affect any of them. Democrats have proposed two abortion bills this year, which have not yet passed committee hearings.

One of the bills hopes to revoke the pre-statehood law that criminalizes nearly all abortions. Furthermore, the Arizona Supreme Court is considering revoking the 1864 anti-abortion law. For now, a lower court has concluded that authorities cannot charge doctors for performing an abortion in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy because other Arizona laws over the years have allowed them to provide abortions.
In addition, abortion rights advocates in the state are pushing to ask voters to create a constitutional right to abortion. They are organizing a push to collect 384,000 signatures from registered voters by July to put the question on the November ballot.
