Warner Bros. Co-Founder’s Granddaughter, Cass Warner, Dies at 76

Cass Warner, granddaughter of Harry Warner, one of the four founding brothers of Warner Bros Studios, has died at the age of 76. Her death has ended an era for the family whose legacy greatly shaped Hollywood. Her son, Cole Hauser, who is known for his role in Yellowstone, shared the news of her demise on his Instagram page.

“It is with a heavy heart that my mother. Cass Sperling Warner passed away at the age of 76,” Hauser wrote on Instagram. “Her kindness, love, humor, and amazing spirit will be missed by not only my family but the world. You have touched so many.

I know you will be up in the heavens sitting next to all the great humans that have passed through our earth. We will meet again. Bye for now.” Cass Warner was born on March 8, 1948, and she proudly considered herself a third-generation filmmaker.

Her dad, Milton Sperling, worked on over 50 movies, including the well-known 1955 drama, “The Court-Martial Of Billy Mitchell” and the 1958 film “Marjorie Morningstar”, starring Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood.

Her mom, Betty Warner Sheinbaum, was an artist and activist. She was the daughter of Harry Warner, a big name in Hollywood’s history. Cass’ grandfather, Harry Warner, was the oldest of the Warner brothers–Sam, Albert, and Jack, who were immigrants from Poland.

They started in the early days of movies back in 1905, and in 1923, they co-founded the studio. Together, they built a powerhouse in the film industry. An industry where dreams came to life and where movies tackled social issues, like the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, and the Red Scare.

His daughter, Betty Warner Sheinbaum, described him as a serious and driven man. He was the heart and soul of the company, always pushing it forward.

In 1939, Betty married a producer named Milton Sperling, who had worked with another big name in Hollywood, Darryl Zanuck, at Fox. Harry didn’t want his family working for the competition. However, b he allowed Sperling to start an independent production unit at Warner Bros.

According to a biography on Cass Warner’s website, Warner Sisters, she was introduced to the world of filmmaking at a young age. She would accompany her father to story meetings and explore the Warner Bros. lot.

As she grew up, she studied acting with director Milton Katselas and received mentorship in screenwriting from her father and Howard Koch, who wrote the classic film Casablanca.

In 1993, she published her family’s story in a book titled “Hollywood Be Thy Name–The Warner Brothers Story.” She later updated and expanded the book in 2008, renaming it The Brothers Warner. Warner also directed a documentary adaptation of the book in 2007, which aired on PBS American Masters series.

Through her company, Warner Sisters, she produced the documentary “Hopper: In His Own Words (2012)” about actor Dennis Hopper. Warner was also involved in creating a nonprofit organization called The Dream Factory, which features interviews with Hollywood stars and insiders to inspire others.

Cass Warner is survived by her son Cole Hauser, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Wings Hauser. Also, by her husband Glenn Allan Pool, her daughters Vanessa Mooney and Tao Gaines, her son Jesse Pool, and three grandchildren.
