Residents of Chicago are voicing their displeasure with the Mayor’s decision to erect a winter shelter for migrants at Brighton Park.

Neighbors of Brighton Park were the first to notice the materialization of a structure, which they later discovered is a government-funded shelter.

Chicago residents have raised several concerns about the winter shelter that has started taking shape in Brighton Park. For one, neighbors of the Park are concerned about the security risks that the shelter might constitute.

On the other hand, some residents fear the site is unsafe for human habitation. Lastly, some residents are concerned that taxpayer money is being used to construct the structure.

As of Thursday, November 30, construction workers could be seen putting up frames to support the mobile winter camp. Being a makeshift structure, city officials project that the structure will take only a few days to complete.

Since it is a winter shelter, the tent will be heated. Likewise, the structure will have conveniences, a general kitchen, and security for roughly 2,000 migrants.

The Mayor has since made a release in defense of their initiative to put up emergency accommodation for scores of migrants left stranded on the cold streets of Chicago.

According to Mayor Brandon Johnson, the migrant challenge is not peculiar to his time in office. Instead, he inherited them from the immediate former Mayor — Lori Lightfoot- and could not casually look the other way.

According to Mayor Johnson, Chicago residents are witnessing the City trying its best to manage the migrant crisis.

Yes, it is thought that the presence of these migrants might inconvenience residents. Still, he is only trying to ensure this population does not constitute nuisances on the streets of Chicago.

Since August 2022, about 20,000 migrants have been moved to Chicago, a sanctuary city, from other less liberal states. Most of these migrants came into the US through southern states, seeking to apply for asylum. However, many of the US sanctuary cities are becoming strained to breaking point.

Interestingly, besides the migrant crisis of Chicago, over 65,000 of the citizens are said to qualify as homeless.

So, Mayor Johnson does not have just the migrants to deal with but will also have to find residences for the City’s homeless. However, residents are not satisfied with the Mayor’s expenses on migrants.

So far, the City has spent $92,000 on leasing the space at Brighton Park and has awarded a $29 million contract to GardaWorld to construct similar shelters. Unfortunately, residents don’t seem to be backing down on their demonstrations in a bid to register their grievances.

It is, therefore, a standoff between Mayor Johnson, who took office six months ago, and Chicago residents, who are bent on dictating how the officeholder should utilize public spaces.
