The move is pivotal in US history. If the House Republicans follow through with the impeachment proceedings, Mayorkas will be the second Cabinet secretary to be ousted by the House.

House Republicans will make history in their ongoing standoff with the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas. Last Sunday, the House Republicans went public with two articles of impeachment against the Secretary.

So far, Mayorkas insists on being void of any wrongdoing. On the contrary, the articles of impeachment accuse him of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and breach of public trust.”

In a buildup to the ongoing efforts by House Republicans to impeach Mayorkas, Mark Green and the Department of Homeland Security spokesperson have alternated in making statements and press releases. Mark Green is Chairman of the House Committee investigating the recent activities of the DHS concerning the ongoing immigration crises at the Southern borders.

According to Green, the articles highlight clear reasons and instances for the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas. The House Committee on Homeland Security consists of a Republican majority and has unanimously stated that Mayorkas has, on multiple occasions, made false statements to the US Congress and Americans about conditions at the borders.

In a bid to hold someone responsible for immigration policies of the Biden administration, Congress has invited Mayorkas to testify on multiple occasions about how they are handling migrant influx through the southern border states. On each of those occasions, Mayorkas stands his ground that the DHS has not defied the law, in any guise, under the Biden administration.

Recently, the DHS released a memo dismissing the GOP-led investigation as a wild goose chase. The memo claims that the allegations leveled against the Department are fictitious and lack the backing of tangible evidence. Likewise, the DHS has also pointed to the professional opinions of some legal experts, who agree that the House committee has not met all the necessary conditions to impeach the Secretary constitutionally.

During a statement on Sunday, Green said something about the effect of Mayorkas’ running an open-border policy. According to Green, Mayorkas has put the country in serious straits by his unconstitutional activities. For more perspective, Green said of Mayorkas that he has “empowered and enriched cartels, mass fentanyl poisonings, surges of terror watchlist suspects, more criminal illegal aliens causing harm in our communities, and traumatized and exploited migrants.”

So, there is still a long way to go before Secretary Mayorkas’s impeachment. First, the committee will review the articles of impeachment on Tuesday before presenting them to the full chamber. Next, the Senate must adopt it and fix a date for Mayorkas’s. However, the Secretary has enough time to set his House in order, and things may turn out in his favor.

In 1879, William Belknap was the first ever US Cabinet secretary to be impeached from office. So, if things proceed as the Republican House wants them to, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas would be the second.

Belknap was secretary of war to then-President Ulysses Grant. The House impeached Belknap for unprecedented scales of corruption. However, the Senate did not get the two-thirds majority to uphold the impeachment. Interestingly, Belknap had already resigned his appointment when he heard news of the impeachment proceedings.
