Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy revealed during a town hall that the federal government “lied systematically” to Americans. His brash debate performances and digital-focused campaign make the 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur a controversial character in the 2024 election cycle.

Although a political newcomer with libertarian leanings, Ramaswamy calls for “quantum leap” changes in the country. In addition, the Ohio entrepreneur relishes attacking the political establishment and mocking media outlets. However, he markets himself as the heir to former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement.

Ramaswamy’s parroting of a series of far-right conspiracy theories saw him have a pushback against CNN moderator Abby Phillip. However, this showcased his efforts to appeal to a Donald Trump-aligned, conspiracy-minded element of the GOP electorate.

During the hour-long CNN town hall at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, Ramaswamy reiterated several conspiracy theories. He suggested that the federal law enforcement agents fueled the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol. The Republican presidential candidate portrayed the attack as “entrapment.”

However, FBI Director Christopher Wray revealed earlier this year that such suggestions were “ludicrous.” Yet, without evidence to support his claim, Ramaswamy insisted the January 6 Capitol attack was an “inside job.”

Consequently, Phillip asked, “Where is the evidence that the government was involved in planning or executing January 6?” Ramaswamy then alleged, without evidence, that officials “suppressed footage of the riot.

He added that the new footage shows law enforcement “rolling out the red carpet,” allowing people inside the Capitol. Also, Ramaswamy made similar claims about the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. He pointed to the acquittal of several of the 14 people authorities charged in the conspiracy. However, he ignored the fact that the court convicted nine of them.

Consequently, Ramaswamy’s claims led to an exchange with Phillip, who starkly contrasted Ramaswamy’s comparatively staid demeanor. In addition, Ramaswamy revealed that he would have dismissed such conspiracy theories as “fringe” and “nonsense” three years ago.

However, he said he now believes the federal government has “lied to us systematically” about several things. He said he thinks the government lied about the coronavirus pandemic, Hunter Biden’s laptop, and more.

Despite his brash claims, Ramaswamy appears to be getting less attention in the presidential race. Besides his far-reaching policy prescriptions, much of the attention he gets has come thanks to nasty personal attacks.

The most viral was when former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley called him “scum” for bringing up her daughter’s TikTok use. Similarly, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie described Ramaswamy as an “obnoxious blowhard” during the last debate.

Due to Ramaswamy’s controversial remarks, many doubt his tact and demeanor to be the President of the United States. However, he said he’s been called “dumb, scum and worse” during this campaign and will always fight back.

“Am I going to tell my kids to go to school and be a bully? No, I’m not,” Ramaswamy said. “But I’m going to tell them if somebody bullies you or hits you, you’re going to hit it back ten times harder. And that’s the way I’m going to lead this country.”

Also, voters believe he cannot be president because he is Hindu, and his faith doesn’t match that of the founders. “I respectfully disagree,” he said. Ramaswamy admitted he wouldn’t be the best candidate to spread Christianity through the country. However, he concluded that it isn’t the President’s job.
