Police Arrests Man Who Fatally Shot Mom, 11-Year-Old in Parked Car

After an exhaustive and detailed days-long manhunt, authorities have successfully apprehended a suspect believed to be involved in the tragic shooting of a mother and her 11-year-old daughter in Worcester, Massachusetts, providing a semblance of closure to a community reeling from the senseless violence.

Chasity Nunez, a dedicated specialist serving in the Connecticut National Guard, and her young daughter, Zella Nunez, were discovered fatally shot inside a parked car on March 5, plunging the community into shock and grief. 

The Worcester Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the incident, scouring surveillance footage that captured the chilling moment when two individuals approached the victims’ vehicle and unleashed a barrage of gunfire, leaving the mother and daughter fatally wounded.

Amidst the anguish and despair, law enforcement agencies mobilized an extensive manhunt to track down the perpetrators responsible for this heinous act. One suspect, identified as 28-year-old Karel Mangual, was apprehended promptly, just one day after the tragic double homicide, offering a glimmer of hope to a community gripped by fear and uncertainty.

However, the search continued for the second suspect, 27-year-old Dejan Belnavis, prompting law enforcement authorities to issue a public appeal and offer a substantial reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to his capture. 

The tireless efforts of law enforcement officers culminated in a breakthrough on Monday, with Belnavis being taken into custody following a motor vehicle stop in the San Diego area, marking a significant milestone in the investigation.

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier commended the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and underscored the crucial role of advanced technology, U.S. Marshals, and state police in locating and apprehending Belnavis.

The swift apprehension of both suspects has provided a measure of relief to the community, although questions remain regarding the motive behind the tragic shooting.

In the aftermath of the arrests, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. confirmed that both Mangual and Belnavis were wanted on charges of armed assault to murder and illegal possession of firearms.

Mangual’s charges are expected to be elevated to murder on Tuesday, underscoring the gravity of the offense. The loss of Chasity Nunez, a dedicated member of the Connecticut National Guard, has reverberated deeply within her community and beyond.

Major Dave Pytlik of the Connecticut National Guard paid tribute to Nunez’s exemplary service and described her as a cherished member of the 142nd Medical Company, highlighting her unwavering commitment to duty and selfless service.
