Phylicia Rashad, renowned actress and dean of Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, is preparing to step down from her role at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.
The news of her impending departure was first reported by the Journal of Blacks In Higher Education on March 19, following an email sent to the campus community in August outlining her plans to leave.
In the email sent on August 7, Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick expressed gratitude to Dean Rashad for her exceptional contributions during her tenure.
Rashad, an internationally acclaimed actor and stage director, has a long-standing commitment to arts education and literacy, having served in various roles at several esteemed institutions, including Howard University, New York University, and Carnegie Mellon University, among others.

Rashad’s return to her alma mater in 2021 marked the re-establishment of the College of Fine Arts as an independent entity and its renaming in honor of the late Chadwick A. Boseman, an esteemed alumnus.
During her time as dean, Rashad facilitated significant advancements in the College of Fine Arts, including securing substantial contributions to support various programs and initiatives.
One of Rashad’s notable achievements was securing a $5.4 million gift from Netflix to establish The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship, providing incoming theater students with full-tuition scholarships for four years.

Additionally, Rashad oversaw the appointment of distinguished faculty members and facilitated collaborations with organizations like the Capri Holdings Foundation and The Walt Disney Company to enhance students’ opportunities.
Rashad’s leadership has revitalized the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts and elevated its profile within the university and the broader community. Her commitment to excellence and service has left an indelible mark on Howard University and its students.
However, as Rashad is preparing to step down as dean, Howard University will commence a search for her successor.
