In 2014 Minaj released an iconic picture of Malcolm X looking out a window with a semi-automatic weapon to promote her song “Lookin Ass.” As soon as it dropped, the rapper got reprimanded by fans who felt it was inappropriate.
Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz and the family attorney L. Londell McMillan quickly released a statement to rebuke Minaj for her actions.
Ilyasah disclosed that the family did not endorse Minaj’s use of the picture. The artwork did not depict what her late father stood for or his legacy. Afterward, Minaj apologized and then removed the artwork from her social media. She also explained that the single’s cover was never the official artwork.
Meanwhile, in his statement, McMillian warned people to desist from using the picture on social media. He further disclosed that failure to do so would result in legal actions taken against them.
