New York City is one of the most famous sanctuary cities in the US. However, the city is brimming with immigrants arriving at an alarming rate. Since the spring of 2022, they have taken in over 160,000 asylum seekers and helped them. About 68,000 of these immigrants are still in the city’s care.
Therefore, the city had to do something about it, and fast. The mayor announced that there is a new rule for immigrants who want to seek asylum in his town. It states that there must be at least 32 hours’ notice before charter companies can drop off migrants in the city.
Furthermore, the order specifies that they can only drop off these migrants between 8:30 am and noon. This rule specifies the timing as several buses arrived at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan at around 4 a.m. one day.
The drop-offs can also only happen between Monday and Friday to ensure consistency. Also, the only designated loading zone is on West 41st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues.

The government could punish those who violate this order if they catch them. There is a $500 fine for individuals and up to $2,000 for corporations, with a possibility of three months in jail.
According to Adams, this recent influx is thanks to Texas’ new policies. In a press release, he said, “New York City has begun to see another surge of migrants arriving, and we expect this to intensify over the coming days as a result of Texas Governor Abbott’s cruel and inhumane politics.”
He continued, “Just last week, 14 chartered buses with migrants arrived overnight from Texas, the highest recorded number in a single night, in addition to the hundreds of migrants who arrived that very same day via other modes of transportation.”

Therefore, this new order was supposed to curb this influx. However, barely 48 hours later, three more buses filled with immigrants arrived in New York unannounced. This makes it difficult to determine if the order will actually work effectively.
New York City is currently overflowing with migrants from several places, and they need the law to provide some stability. As Texas Governor Abbott keeps sending more migrants to the city, it is only a matter of time before something bad happens.
The deputy mayor for communications, Fabian Levy, also spoke on the negative effects of Abbott’s recent moves. He claims that Abbott was using migrants as political pawns by moving them across the country to several sanctuary cities.

What’s more, he does not notify these cities appropriately. New York City is one of the most affected cities as planes and buses with migrants keep arriving all the time.
The governor is trying to salvage the situation by building refugee camps and allocating funds to their well-being. However, this is not a permanent solution, and the country is facing a huge migration crisis.
