The Cannes Film Festival held its 76th edition from May 14 to 25, 2024. The event saw several high-profile celebrities attend the ceremony, including Rowland.

A female security guard tried to usher Rowland off the red carpet during the event on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. She was arguing with the guard, who tried to hurry her up the stairs. Before the incident, she posed for pictures and answered questions from the reporters and photographers.
On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Rowland addressed the altercation in a video. In the video, she held herself back from crying. She said the security knows what happened and so does she.
Facing the camera, while almost in tears, she said she has boundaries, which she enforces, and that’s all. She said that other people weren’t rushed off the carpet. Individuals, she said do not look like her, a reference to her skin color.

She reaffirmed her earlier statement about standing her ground, before referencing the staff, who she said was standing hers. This incident occurred during the premiere of “Marcello Mio” a film jointly produced by the French and Italians.
According to reports, the staff members who were employed to help guests up the stairs were overly hostile. The report claimed that Rowland tried to ignore the incident. However, the main reason behind the incident remains uncertain.

On social media, particularly X, commentators have started speculating on what might have caused the issue. Some users claimed the altercation was racially motivated. The festival has a racial discriminatory history.
Shortly after the incident, on Friday, May 25, 2024, the same security guard was seen in an altercation with Dominican actress Massiel Taveras. Taveras almost became physical with the female staff.
