Joey Lawrence has opened up on how he met his wife, Samantha Cope, in what he describes as an “unorthodox meet-cute.” The December 2023 interview came before their divorce announcement.
On August 13, 2024, eight months after Lawrence’s interview, Cope filed for divorce from him. Lawrence met Cope in 2021 after meeting on the set of “My Husband’s Secret Brother,” where they played love interests. However, he didn’t know they’d end up together.
Joey Lawrence Did Not See a Future With Samantha Cope
In December 2023, Joey Lawrence revealed that when he and Cope initially got into a relationship, he never expected it to end in marriage. Speaking on his reason, Lawrence stated that he had never pursued a relationship with someone he had worked with.
He said, “That was just very, very much out of the ordinary for me. I’ve never actually gotten into a serious relationship with somebody that I actually worked with, never. It was very unexpected.”

Additionally, Lawrence continued, “These wild twists and turns that you get to be our age. You just kind of go, ‘All right, well, I guess that’s what it is.’ You learn to accept the unorthodox way some things just sort of roll-out, and you’re thankful for — you’re thankful for it, even though it’s not what you expected.”
Joey Lawrence also discussed the movie where he met Cope and the premise surrounding their characters’ relationships. Lawrence, explaining their dynamic, said that his character was both Cope’s character’s lover and killer.
When Did Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope Tie the Knot?
After meeting on the set of “My Husband’s Secret Brother,” Samantha Cope and Joey Lawrence tied the knot in May 2022. Subsequently, in January 2023, Lawrence and Cope welcomed their first child, a daughter, Dylan.
However, Dylan is Joey Lawrence’s third child, after having two older daughters from his previous marriage to Chandie Yawn-Nelson. In his December 2023 interview, Lawrence joked about how his daughter, Dylan, kept him young while simultaneously making him older.
He said, “Look, life is a beautiful, sometimes crazy-unexpected journey, and the ups and downs are real, and I’m very thankful that people that I love are around me and that there’s health around us.”
Speculations about a possible separation of the couple began earlier in August 2024, after pictures of a family vacation surfaced online. In the images, Cope was absent from the vacation and Joey Lawrence was without his wedding ring.

Joey Lawrence’s brothers, Matthew and Andrew, and their mother, Donna, were among the vacation guests. Additionally, Lawrence’s daughters, Charleston and Liberty, and Andrew’s girlfriend, Brittany McGowan, were among the guests.
Speaking on the vacation, Lawrence and his brothers said, “Nothing matters more in this life than the beautiful memories you share with loved ones. It was a vacation of a lifetime, and we can’t wait to go back!”
Samantha Cope Has Filed for Divorce From Joey Lawrence
On August 21, 2024, the news of Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope’s divorce was announced. According to court documents filed by Cope, the reason for the divorce was irreconcilable differences. Additionally, court documents revealed that the couple had separated on June 7, 2024, before filing the lawsuit on August 13, 2024.
According to the filing documents, Cope applied to block the court’s ability to award either side spousal support. Additionally, she seeks full custody of their 19-month-old daughter, Dylan, allowing Lawrence visitation at her discretion. The filing mentions that once Dylan is 3, Lawrence can take her for two nights at Cope’s home if he’s available.
Additionally, Cope asks Lawrence to limit extended visits with Dylan until she can request them herself. She also requests that Lawrence be present during Dylan’s visit while she is a minor, and no non-family members are allowed unless approved by her.
