Simon Cowell’s sexual orientation became a subject of conversation in a U.K. courtroom 2014. The famous TV personality was implicated after a recording was played during former U.K. “X Factor” judge Tulisa’s trial on drug charges. 

In the recording, Gareth Varey, Tulisa’s manager, could be heard claiming boldly that Cowell was gay. The person Varey was talking to in the recording was another man identified as reporter Mazher Mahmood. 

According to the recording, Mahmood asks Varey if Cowell is gay, and Varey replies with a “Yes.” During their conversation, Mahmood asked, “Have you slept with him?” To which Varey replied, “No.” However, when asked why he was yet to, Varey said: “One day I will when I make my move.”

Mahmood asked, “Do you fancy him or not?” and Varey answered: “No.” 

After that, Mahmood asked, “How do you know he’s gay?” To which Varey responded: “I know people who have.”

It was enough to get people wondering about Simon Cowell’s personal life. It quickly got serious as Cowell’s legal team stepped in to clear up the confusion.

A spokesman for Cowell said at the time: “We are bound by contempt of court rules, so we cannot respond to these claims in the manner we wish to. We are speaking to the Attorney General’s office – and we intend to make a statement in court as soon as possible.” 

Simon Cowell’s Response to His Name Getting Mentioned 

Cowell is a famous face in showbiz. He is the mastermind behind the “X Factor” and is famously known as a controversial judge on the “America’s Got Talent” show. 

Being who he is, Cowell hardly cared about the noise as he supports the gay community. However, he balked at what the accusations implied — that he had been lying and hiding for years. 

His legal team was called in to settle the matter, and they prepared a statement to that end. It read: 

“Simon was referred to during the trial without forewarning, resulting in widespread media coverage of untrue claims regarding his private life. In 2014, the question of whether someone is or is not gay is antiquated. (As it happens, he isn’t, though if he were, he would simply have said so).”

The statement continued: “However, the issue was the false suggestion made by Mr. Varey that Simon — who is renowned for his honesty and candidness — had thus not been truthful in the public arena, and this is what we have been obliged to clarify.”

Cowell is beloved — and also mildly despised — for his truthfulness, so, understandably, he wanted to lay the rumor that implied he had been anything but honest to rest. 

Is Simon Cowell Gay? 

No, Simon Cowell is not gay, and, according to him, if he were, there would be no reason to hide it. In 2020, after Philip Schofield decided to come out as gay on TV, Cowell praised him and admitted it was how he would do it if he were gay.

He said: “I think it is a very positive thing. You’ve seen the support he has gotten because nobody actually cares about sexuality anymore.” 

Cowell believes that people’s sexuality shouldn’t matter anymore in 2023. He also thinks that whoever a person has chosen to love shouldn’t be a “conscious thought” anymore.

He said: “I’ve worked on films, TV, in music, and probably 50 percent of the people I have worked with are gay, or they have been gay, whatever. It’s not even a conscious thought anymore.”
