On February 3rd, deputies of the sheriff’s office in Houston opened fire on a woman after thinking she was an intruder in her friend’s apartment. Thanks to the body camera footage the department got, they could see how the full thing went down.
A press release gave the full story of what happened that night. It all started when the sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from an East Houston apartment. The tenant called 911, reporting that someone was in her apartment.
“At approximately 2:14 a.m., the first deputy arrived at the scene and cleared the apartment,” the release said. “There was no intruder located.” Therefore, the second deputy came not long after to assist their colleague.
However, before they left, someone in a neighboring apartment “flagged the deputies down and reported that someone had broken into another nearby apartment.” True to this allegation, they noticed that the front window of that apartment was no longer there.

Someone had broken the glass, and they couldn’t see into the space because the blinds were up. Therefore, a deputy knocked on the windows and announced, “Sheriff’s office.” The footage shows that both deputies moved away from the doors and stood by the windows.
The woman in the apartment, Eboni Pouncy, did not hear this announcement and was scared to hear people knocking on the door by that time. Therefore, she grabbed her gun for protection and walked to the door. She didn’t hear the announcement, and a deputy “saw a female approaching the door holding a firearm.”
One deputy began yelling at Pouncy to “drop the” gun but didn’t even finish their sentence before opening fire on her. They both shot repeatedly until they ran out of ammunition. Furthermore, one deputy reloaded their gun and fired over and over again.

This resulted in five different gunshot wounds for Pouncy. The shots hit her in the chest, abdomen, thigh, leg, and foot. After realizing what they had done, the two officers rushed to her and performed “life-saving efforts” on her.
Thankfully, she got stable, and they rushed her to a nearby hospital. There, she got urgent care and is still alive to date. Her attorney, Ben Crump, insists they could have avoided this incident altogether if they were patient.

He also referred to the video footage as “evidence of the unnecessary and excessive force used against her.” In an interview with CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” the lawyer also talked about how lucky Pouncy is to be alive today. “[They fired] over two dozen bullets, and she lived,” he said. She would require a lot of physical therapy, but her prognosis is good.
Investigators later discovered that Pouncy was “a guest of the apartment resident and that they had broken the window to get inside because they did not have a key with them,” the video statement said. The two deputies are now on administrative leave pending the completion of this investigation.
