Looking back on his younger years, Rob Lowe reminisces about his unexpected but intense boxing session with Tom Cruise.
On Monday, July 15, 2024, the Rich Eisen Show released an episode where Lowe was interviewed. The 50-year-old show host, Eissen, asked Lowe to discuss working with Cruise. Lowe and Cruise met for the first time during their time on the set of the 1983 movie “The Outsiders.“

Francis Ford Coppola directed The Outsider, adapting it from S.E. Hinton’s novel of the same name. It was on this set that 17-year-old Lowe met 19-year-old Cruise. Lowe was cast to portray the character of Sodapop Curtis, while Cruise played Steve Randle. The 1983 movie adaptation also saw the casting of C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane and Patrick Swayze.
According to Lowe, at the time, Cruise was residing with Emilio Estevez. At that time, Cruise had just finished auditioning for Taps, a 1981 movie in which he played the role of Cadet Captain. Giving an insight into working together, Lowe said that he and Cruise bonded together like brothers. Additionally, Lowe stated that they would work out, jog, and take morning runs together.

However, Lowe said the highlight of their time came from an incident that ended with both of them taking a much-needed break. Lowe stated that during their time on set, Cruise was so competitive that they used to box with each other in their hotel hallways. Lowe said that as adult teenagers in a movie location, they were about to get their hands on mouthpieces and headgear.
Subsequently, they would kit up and spar, engaging in a few boxing fights. Lowe stated that, unlike Cruise, who was ripped at the time, he was a skinny youngster. However, the physical difference did not stop Lowe from getting a clean punch through.
However, Lowe stated that as soon as he rang Cruise’s bell, Cruise knocked him out completely. Lowe said that when he woke up, he found himself on the floor. Describing the feeling. Lowe stated that all he remembered was his eyes going black and the falling feeling.

In April 2020, during a podcast with Dax Shepard, Lowe disclosed another close memory with Cruise. Lowe was invited as a guest on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert. Speaking on their first encounter, Lowe stated that they met in New York for the first time.
Lowe states that the first batch of auditions took place in Los Angeles, and only four people were picked for the New York audition. Additionally, Lowe stated that the four people who were picked were himself, Cruise, Estevez and Howell. Lowe stated that when they got to New York, they were logged into the Plaza Hotel, which was his first time in the hotel.
However, when they got to check in, it was annoying that they would be sharing a room, something Cruise was not pleased with. Additionally, Lowe stated that while he did not care about Cruise’s reaction, it did make him laugh as it was gnarly.
