Gov. Katie Hobbs is Weighing the Odds of Deploying National Guards to Arizona’s Borders

Arizona has six entry ports from Mexico, and migrants are flowing through them at an alarming rate.

However, the migrant traffic was so overwhelming that the state had to reach a compromise by closing one of the entry ports last week. According to reports, Customs personnel manning the Lukeville entry point have been redeployed to assist Border Patrol.

The primary responsibility of the Customs officers at Lukeville was to search people and vehicles coming through the border.

However, the smuggling cartels are cutting through border walls and letting in illegal migrants in droves. This overburdens border patrol personnel who take border-breaching migrants into custody.

Gov. Hobbs will be visiting the border in the company of high-ups of the state Guard. She wants to assess the situation and take appropriate steps to contain the migrant crisis. Of course, Hobbs has been calling the attention of the Biden administration to the challenges Arizona is facing at the border with Mexico.

The spike in border crossings at Lukeville reflects sudden changes in the smuggling routes that traffickers exploit. Also, Border Patrol officers are noticing diversity in the nationality of migrants, particularly at the Lukeville wall.

There are several sanctions for crossing the border illegally. One of such is a five-year ban on re-entry. So, once a migrant undergoes screening and is found unfit for asylum, they are deported and restricted from visiting the U.S. for five years.

Gov. Hobbs and the two senators representing Arizona have made suggestions on an executive order deploying me of the National Guard to assist Border Patrol.

Safeguarding the six international ports that Arizona shares with Mexico is not the problem. Instead, taking illegal migrants into custody and screening them is the challenge of Customs and Border Patrol at the moment.

So, critics believe that closing off the Lukeville port indefinitely is outside the economic interest of Arizona. Instead, they feel President Biden should open the borders to allow free movement of legal commuters. On the other hand, the federal government can then shore up the number of personnel handling the mammoth migrants entering Lukeville illegally.

In places like Tucson, Custom officers, Air Marshall officers, and different law enforcement agencies are assisting with migrant screening. However, traffickers are exploiting the remoteness of Lukeville.

After crossing through gaps in the Lukeville border wall, cut by the cartel, migrants would sometimes walk as far as 14 miles to turn themselves in for screening. Unfortunately, the recent low temperatures in this desert region of Arizona is a major humanitarian crisis.

Some of the migrants travel with minors who have to brave the extreme weather conditions and long walks.

At Tucson, John Modlin, sector chief of Border Patrol, is recording an all-time high of migrant traffic through the Arizona corridor. According to him, CBP made almost 19,000 migrant arrests in a single week.

It is obvious that U.S. immigration policies will be a major deciding factor in the coming elections. So, GOPs are proposing strict measures to crack down on illegal migrants. On the contrary, polls show that the average American Democrat does not see it as an issue. Will this affect your choice of who to vote for in the coming elections?
