In an interview with Complex on Monday, March 11, 2024, Muni Long discussed the origin of “California King Bed.” Long recounted that she was living in Miami and working out of “We the Best Studio” with Jermaine [Jackson] from The Runners. “They had the chords and everything,” she said. “I listened, I went back into the room, and they gave me the file.”

Long continued to speak about how she was planning to move to Los Angeles in California; “At the time, I was planning to move to L.A.,” she recounted. “I was online looking for furniture when Maine came in the room, and he’s like, ‘What you got?’ I didn’t have anything because I had been messing around, and I looked at my computer.”

She recalled how she came up with a title; “I said ‘California King Bed,’ and he said, ‘OK,’ and then he left. So I was like, ‘Oh, now I gotta write that.’”

During the interview, Muni Long also talked about how she wrote the song in haste. “I wrote the song in like 10 minutes,” she said. “I was like, ‘Turn it up, let me get this done real quick,’ so I could go back to looking for my furniture.”

 

 

Furthermore, Long said the song was originally going to be pitched to Kelly Clarkson. However, that eventually didn’t happen because a few months later, her publisher told her that the song was going to Rihanna.

“I was super excited. She was on tour at the time, but she cut the song, and the rest is history,” Long said. “You wouldn’t think that she would do something like that.” Muni Long also spoke about the impact that had on her career.

 

 

“What that did for the trajectory of my career as a creative was massive,” she noted. “After that, I did work with her in the studio many times, but that was my first entry point into my journey with Rih.”

While talking about the song, Muni Long noted how it brought her into the limelight and skyrocketed her career. Also, she said she has worked with Rihanna many times with Rihanna since “California King Bed.”
