Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene drew a striking analogy between Donald Trump and Jesus Christ at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas. 

The Democrats and the fake news media, she informed the crowd, “want to talk about President Trump being a convicted felon all the time. Well, you know what? Not only is the man I worship a convicted felon. Additionally, he was killed on a Roman crucifixion.”

The US lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene recently elicited scorn and disbelief after speaking at a rally in Las Vegas where she likened Trump to Jesus. 

Greene, who has been a staunch supporter of Trump, made the comparison while addressing a Republican party rally.

Speaking to the crowd, Greene mentioned that Trump and Jesus both were “convicted felons,” convicted by the media and political elite, respectively. Rep. Greene elaborated on her analogy by associating Trump with other historically victimized personalities. 

She declared, “Today, Trump is being arrested alongside some of the most amazing individuals in history.” Following his arrest, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Jesus: The Roman authority had Jesus taken into custody and killed.

The backlash on social media was instant with many people accusing Greene of being insensitive and having a very poor taste of humor. 

Some people said that this comparison was tactless and trivialized the crucifixion of Jesus as well as its teachings.

Some of the religious leaders and organizations criticized Greene for his utterances that they termed as improper and irreverent. 

ADL complained that the comparison was “deeply offensive” and “disrespectful to the Jewish faith.

With temperatures predicted to reach beyond 100 degrees, the rally was held in extremely hot conditions in Las Vegas. The participants faced difficult weather because there wasn’t enough shade in several places. 

To prepare, the campaign distributed water bottles and made sure that medical personnel were on site to manage any health-related difficulties.

Even with the extreme heat, the event organizers made some attempts at mitigation. Limited shaded and air-conditioned tent places were available, first-come, first-served. 

This was all part of the strategy to make sure rally participants could remain cool.

Trump himself quickly addressed Greene’s comments and said that he felt flattered to be compared to her. Still, according to many critics, the comparison was not a compliment but a way to reduce the importance of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Also, Trump’s prior denials of the science underlying climate change presented a sharp contrast to the real issues the rally’s guests were facing as they withered in the heat. Even in the face of mounting evidence of the effects of climate change, this denial has been a defining feature of his political approach.

Greene’s comments have also provoked criticism for their ahistorical nature. 

Jesus was a man who had lived in the first century and was put to death by the Romans, while Trump is an ex-president who has been charged with several offenses.

Trump has been associated with fraud and obstruction of justice among other crimes. 

He has not been convicted of any criminal activity however he has been charged for misconduct and has been involved in several legal cases.

Greene’s lawyers have stated that Greene has the right to say whatever she wants under the Constitution of the United States, which gives its citizens the freedom of speech. However, numerous scholars counter that hate speech or uses of vulgar language, for example, cannot be allowed under the Constitution.

Her comments have had major political repercussions as noted in sections above. Several Democrats have raised the possibility of her resignation, while some Republicans have disowned her remarks.

These comments from Greene have sparked a lot of debate as to the consequences of such language on political comprehension in the United States.
